325i Onboard computer question

I have located a possible replacement for my noboard computer but I have a few questions. My current computer is the cars original and it has 11 buttons. The possible replacement has 18 buttons. The replacements part number is as follows 65 81 8 357 684.I contacted the BMW dealer in town and he stated that an 11 button must be replaced by another 11 button and that these OB Computers are coded and will only work with the car they are coded for.He says that purchasing a used one would do me no good.TRhanks in advance for the reponses. This is a great way to learn more about my Beemer....

You need a second connector for the OBC to replace your existing 11 button check control / temperature display (what you have now is NOT an OBC), another 5-6 wires, and a turn stalk if you want to control the OBC that way. You'll move two wires, add 5-6 wires, and possibly code the OBC at your dealer to match your car if the car it came out of is significantly different. Should be an easy weekend project if you know how to take the car apart and can use solder and heat shrink.
