What Are the Odds - Another 650i Now Parking Next to Me!

For the last month a parking lot next door neighbor has been parking her brand new 750Li right across from me. She got it a few days before I got the 650i. (She had the new Jag sedan and loved it, but after it was in the shop for 40 straight days she and her husband had it bought back as a lemon.)

I pull in yesterday in the 650i to park in my spot and the 750Li has been replaced by a silver 650i with a black top. It has Steptronic and the Sports package from my walk around it.

So I go upstairs to ask my neighbor (she also works on my floor in advertising) what gives. Her husband, she says, got the "first one" and he wanted her to drive it. Ordered it in July (like I did). I questioned her closely on this, as I was supposed to get the first one. (Me or GeneArch, anyway.) I don't know how she missed seeing mine, but remember, she's a woman.

It came in last month on the Orion Diamond, she says. Yes, I said, that came in on October 15/6. When did you take delivery? Oh, she says, there was a computer malfunction of some kind at the VPC - you know, up in Oxnard - and all the 650is were held up a week. Well, that's what her dealer (Valencia BMW) is telling her.

Any problems? I ask. The CD player in the glove compartment ate a CD and wouldn't eject it, so the CD player was replaced, and that required the iDrive to be re-loaded. Did it while they waited. But that's about it.

I don't know what I need you guys for any more. I've got another 650i parking right next to me. What are the odds??

Bee, since, unlike you, she doesn't wear a wig, what do you think? I know how envious you are about my ragtop, so I will buy you some stronger hair cement and you can come ride in it.

Wow, how awful is that?! If you knew that was gonna happen, you should have leased one of those Mitsubishi convertibles which is the most popular car among female car buyers. Then when she copy-cats, go get your 6. Hindsight is 20/20.... ah well.

I had several months in my town where I had the only 6er. Now, there's a bunch of them. Kind bothers me, but I'm being vain. At least I got the only 6er that isn't black, white, or a variant of grey.

Does that mean you're gonna have to get the Hamann tuning for exclusivity, Malibu? I think the Hamann rims look nice.

Jealous Neighbors!

Malibu-

It seems that there is always a Cold war going on in the neighborhood when it comes to
automobiles!

My next door neighbor told my wife that I was being *reckless* with our money when I bought our 6'er. My wife did ask "is this a FAMILY car?"

Is it because they drive one of those REDUNDANT Lexus RX 330's SUV's that EVERY Soccer Mom and dad in SO Cal seems to drive??

Every home in this development is up $300K in the last 19 months, So I say to Karen, my neighbor after a few glasses of wine, "You know how you and your Hubby like to go to France every 3 months, well my Sixer is like your trips to France, extravagant but well within the budget!"

I park it in my driveway as ofetn as possible, always immacculate, I know it p*** her off, but it is great fun.

I have another neighbor down the street, he is a young Doctor (32) with some real nice rides a Porsche GT2 and a 2002 M5, he used to rattle on and on about his rides and I would listen intently, now when I pull up he does not want to talk as much. Whats the matter NOW that I have a supercar TOO, we are not friends anymore???"

The funniest guy is another neighbor who drives a tricked out, but very nice Hummer. This guy did not know my name or never really even said hello, but after he saw my 6'er with the top down, he is my BEST FRIEND! "hey HOW YA Doin'?? Where is that beautiful CAR??

Ahh the price of fame....

For all you that are appalled at my post, well here in SoCal thats just the way it is, superficial and shallow just the way I like it!

Cheers-
Skylar's Dad

Ah yes.... let's hear it for honesty.

BTW Malibu - is her car Mineral Silver? The only "silver" 650 on that boat was mine, which I never took delivery of. Had steptronic, sport and Logic7. Hmmm....

Yup. But my neighbor told me that her hubby ordered it in July.

What makes you think I'm unhappy or that I think having another 6er parked next to me somehow disappoints me or is a declaration of war? This is Southern California. I do have a story, though.

Several years ago, a few months before I bought my CL55, I went to AutoStiegler (MBZ) in Encino, CA. I drove the CL55 and a CL600. The salesman was trying to sell me the CL600. He said "You'll be the King of your neighborhood if you get this car." I said to him "I wouldn't even be the knave of the neighborhood. My across the street neighbor has a new big Ferrari coupe, my next door neighbor has a new Bentley Arnage, and the gardener for my other next door neighbor drives a Z8 when he's not trimming the hedges." (I was exaggerating about the gardener, he drives a beater Toyota pickup, but the salesman needed to be notched down.)

I'm not looking to be the King of anything, to prove anything, or to show off anything. I'm looking for an engaging, satisfying driving experience.

That's my philosophy too. I sold an '88 730i which was 16 years old and had 500 thousand kilometers on it to buy my 6. I expect to keep it till the wheels fall off. (Actually to leave it to my grandson!) I have loved every car I have ever had from the 1952 Morris Oxford to this 645 Coupe, loved and looked after each one. Washed every Saturday, waxed every other month. No stinkin' car washes. Come out in the desert and I'll show you an engine compartment you could darn near eat out of.

..i have lots of relatives in CA..orange county...they are always competing with their neighbors..one of my uncles built a brand new theater (120 inch screen, curtains, etc..) and his neighbor came to his house, and within a few weeks, was building his own.

My town is dominated by Escalades, Escalade ESVs, Hummer H2s, Range Rovers, and RX 330s..there are a fair share of X5s as well..lots of nice cars in this area though, i have seen so many bentley continentals at my local supermarket, and the occasional ferrari. saw a few gallardos also. but yeah nothing compared to SoCal..we were driving outta LAX and i must have spotted like 3 ferraris comin out of the airport. its nuts, i love it tho

Malibu-

I love driving such a nice car as well, I am originally from Detroit and my Dad used to work for Ford and actually worked for Iacoca during the launch of the Mustang...so my automobile roots are very deep...

Here is my lineage of Autos throughout my 47 years-not cause you asked, but just b ecause I wanted to write them down...)

1969 -Ford Mustang Fastback 302 Wimbledon White
1972 Cougar XR7 Convertible 351W/4BB
1976 Capri (German Ford) 4 speed/6cyl
1979 Ford Fiesta 4 speed (car I trekked to Cali in 1981)
1972 Datsun 240Z 4 Speed (had to drive imports to fit in))
1985 Honda CRX SI 5 spd/1st one in so/cal
1986 Acura Integra LS / Ist year out/ 5spd
1985 Porsche 944 5spd Guards red (chicks REALLY dug this car)
1993 BMW 325is 5 spd/Alpine white/Parchment /Chrome
1995 Lexus SC300 5 spd very rare in SC's / still no guts
1982 Mercedes Benz 380SL 40K Miles Silver Blue/Georgeous!
1990 Mercedes Benz 500SL used but super clean/White/Blue- FAST
1999 Mercedes Benz SL 500 Silver/Black/Chrome AMG wheels/beautiful car
2004 BMW X5 3.0 Wifes Car, still should have got the 4.4,great car though..
2005 BMW 645 CiC White/Cream Beige/Black top/ Chrome-Very similar to '93 IS (color)

Anyway there I be- a lover of cars allright-

My favs- The Capri and the Datsun were great fun to drive-
The 944 although relatively slow by todays standards (8.5/0-60)
was alot of fun as well, and just got gobs of attention....

I loved the '93 BMW325IS, that car was way good looking for its
time and was very quick with the 5 spd...

The Japanese cars are all excellent if you preferr to have wheels
attached to a sewing machine, they are reliable but like a great
looking chick who has no personality and is terrible in the bedroom.))

I loved all my SL's, not a total drivers car at all, but still loads of fun,
all head turners!

The 6er though is my ULTIMATE car, I love driving it, parking it, even just looking at it.
It is georgeous and combines the best of all the cars I have ever driven...
Thanks i just had to getr that OFF my chest!!!

Smile Very Nice...

Skylar's Dad,

Very nice bio! I am a young blood, no pun intended (For those in Cali). By gosh, I'm a NorthEast City Boy...

Anyway, it's good to hear a little about your driving heritage. There are not many of you out there willing to share your words of experience and I for one like to be surrounded by it.

Here's my history but please do not laugh...

My first car to current date:

1991 Ford Escort GT (White exterior w/Grey interior) Bought it in 1990 so now you know I am a young man... Did I say the chicks really dug this little speedster too!

1999 BMW 540i 6Spd (Oriental Blue w/creame interior) Bought it in 1990. Oh baby...!

2001 BMW 745Li (Oriential Blue w/beige interior) Bought it in 2001.
2002 BMW 745Li (Oriential Blue w/beige interior) Swapped it in 2002.
2003 BMW 745Li (Titanium Silver w/black interior) Swapped it in 2002.
2006 BMW 750Li (Monaco Blue w/beige interior) Bought it in 2005.
2005 BMW 645Cic (Strattus Grey w/beige interior) Bought it in 2005.
2006 BMW 650i convertible (Silver Grey w/beige interior) Swapped in 2005.

All swaps are because I experience some issue with the car and BMWNA & the dealership provided me new vehicle free of any liability.

So you know, I did own other American cars my wife drove because she wasn't ready for the care and prestige that goes along with owning a BMW. "That was then but now it's a different story..." She drives the 7er and can't believe why it took her so long to drive one. Oh well, I told her but the women never listen...

Other American Own Cars during this period:

Ford Escort sedan (1997, 1999, 2000)
Ford Explorer XLT (2000)
Dodge Avenger (1998)
GMC Envoy (2001)

Oh well, you did not ask but I thought to share...

GMAN

Very nice- You are obviously an established BMW man today...
Your wife is LUCKY to have you!

quick story - I was working at Northrop in Pico Rivera on the
B2 program in the late eighties, one of my contemporaries was
driving a Ford Escort GT while I had my 944. He, however added
the extra step of adding a "Turbo" plaque, ripped off from some car,
next to the Escort GT badge, one day I said to him, "Geeze Eric, its
bad enough you drive THAT car, but adding the TURBO badge to THAT
car is clearly an act of desperation"...I got to give it to my buddy
Eric, he laughed his A** off!

My Ford Fiesta is MY claim to FAME!

Cheers-

SD,

Thanks for the story it was hillarious, I am still laughing... I know what you mean,"Geeze Eric, its bad enough yopu drive that car, but adding the TURBO badge to THAT car is clearly an act of desperation" and understand why your buddy did this... Remember the Probe GT Turbo? Big Brother Penis envy... I actually debadged my Escort but would never add anything to it... You never know who might test your badge and oops, that would be embarrising. No not me.

Funny thing, I drove that GT for 11 years 120K with no major issues. Once I decided to buy the '99 BMer I gave the GT to my younger cousin as a first car gift. That little bugger still runs great today. I have my father to thank for that. He always taught me that Real Men take care of their cars and so I did; body and soul.

Thanks for sharing.

G-Man-

You MUST have taken care of that Escort GT to last that long.
I should not rag on American product, after all I grew up in
suburban Detroit and my pops worked at Ford for 32 years
(Public Relations), he is now 82 and still Detroit proud!!

I asked him if he wanted to drive the 6'er the other day and he said...

"after Ford Motor Company put food and drink on our table for all those years
I do not understand how you can BUY one of these!"

...but after he got in the car ....he said "hey, Mike can we put the TOP down????"

-I thought he was going to ask me to cruise the Senior Center next.....

My Dad is great, we all live here in SoCal now, but he still MISSES Detroit!

I respect his loyalty, but after being gone for 24 years, I do not miss it.

Cheers-

Any problems? I ask. The CD player in the glove compartment ate a CD and wouldn't eject it, so the CD player was replaced, and that required the iDrive to be re-loaded. Did it while they waited. But that's about it.

I don't know what I need you guys for any more. I've got another 650i parking right next to me. What are the odds??
