BMW 320is Limited Edition

As posted here , BMW will be offering a limited edition of the racing E90 with the model designation 320is.

4 Cylinders
173 hp (DIN)

I am guessing that it obviously not the same 1995cc, 4 cylinder putting out 200Nm of torque as the E90/91 320i that you can buy now. They have done something fun to it to get 173hp!

They slightly modified the engine. Here are some facts from the german press release.

173 DIN hp @ 7000 rpm
147 lb-ft @ 4250 rpm

Same displacement, however they increased the hub by 1mm and reduced the stroke by 2mm. The cylinders are covered with special aluminum instead of cast-iron in the stock version. Increased compression, special pistons, special con-rod and stronger bedplate construction are the other changes.

Unlike the regular version, this one is coming without Valvetronic. It's a pure DOHC. The head cover is CF and saves 10kg ~ 22 lb.

It comes with a 6 speed manual.

Oh, forgot to add, it will have bigger brakes. 16".

Limited to 2600 units.

I guess this is the homologation special so that they can actually have an engine that's capable of revving above 7500.

Anyone know how much it weighs with the four banger instead of the six?

It is supposed to weigh 2956 lb - 1350kg

Good stuff, Alex, thanks. In the UK the badge they are using is 320si. Sounds odd, but BMW used si before, in 1974, so I guess someone working at BMW GB has a long memory .

Interesting that BMW has chosen to fit only 300mm front brakes (requiring a 16" wheel). Plenty of E46 318s out there already run this configuration from the factory (those whith the increased payload package) and I bet it's the same with the E90 320i. 325mm, 17" brakes would have been no more expensive and awesomely powerful, in direct contrast to some of BMW's more recent hi-po efforts

E90 320i - 1,395 kg including 75 kg driver/fuel/luggage. This compares with the 1,350 kg quoted by Alex, above.

1,350 kg, assuming that does include the 75 kg EU allowance, is exceptionally light for a car this size.

Is it me, or are those the BMW Individual alloy wheels?

Just gathering some more bits.

The wheels are Radial Style 216 and have "BMW Motorsport" logo on them.

And I re-checked it for Andy, the 1350 kg is DIN

Anyone want to guess at what size of socket you'll need to get the oil filter?

Question of the day: are they runflats? This question tends to sort the men from the boys in the BMW range these days...

Final Drive Ratio: 4.10 (stock 320i has 3.38)

The engines are going to be hand built at Hams Hall and sent to Munich. Sweet

And it gets to top speed at 6th gear (225km/h ~ 139mph). w00t!

Alex will no doubt give us the numbers IDC, but my bet is that in most markets BMW will price this up next to the 325i/330i. In European countries with registration taxes based on capacity, buyers will still have an advantage. But in the UK frinstance, no-one will buy this car when they can have a "six" for the same money which goes faster and stops harder out of the box. Especially as most people's idea of "hard-core" is the Sport bodykit.

The car will debut at the next Geneva Motor Show in March, 3-13th 2006.

The projected price in Germany will be 32.150 EUR (incl. 16% VAT).

German dealers will start taking orders in December 2006.
