Inspection 1, on S54 what should be checked?

I have to take my car in next monday for an inspection 1 with about 26,000 miles on the clock. Is there anything I should make sure the service guys do or check. The valve adj is one thing is there anything else?

I had my oil changed 3k ago, will they change it again? If so I better get a sample.

I just realized, need to have them check the subframe and trunk area for cracks.

Does anybody have a list of what is done at inspection 1 on S54?

There are 3 or 4 dozen items, if the tech checks everything he's supposed to. Been a while since I looked, but they may be listed in your owner's manual, did you check there?

I just did an Inspection I on a 99 M Rdstr, but I copied over a worksheet that was from one of my previous visits (under warranty) at the dealer.

I have a blank version for the S-54, but can't access it from the day job...

Great link, Ron! Do you know of anywhere there is the same form (online) for the S-52 models of M Coupe/Rdstr?

BMW Inspection I



Undercarriage


Change oil and oil filter while engine is at operating temperature.


Check transmission for leaks.


Check rear axle for leaks.


Half shafts: Check for leaks at flexible boots.


Visually check fuel tank, lines and connections for leaks.


Check condition, positioning, and mounting of exhaust system. Examine for leaks.


Check power steering system for leaks. Check p/s fluid level; add fluid if necessary.


Remove and install front and rear disc brake pads, check overall thickness. Record results.
Examine brake disc surfaces. Clean brake pad contact points in calipers. Grease wheel centering hubs.


Check front control arm bushings for wear.


Check steering for absence of play, condition of suspension track rods, front axle joints, steering linkage and joint disc.


Check brake and clutch system connections and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning.


Check parking brake actuation. Adjust if necessary.


Check all tire pressures (including spare - except M3, M5, Z8 and Alpina). Correct if necessary. Check condition of tires (outer surfaces [left/right]), tread wear and pattern; in case of uneven tread wear readjust wheel alignment if requested.*
Note:If requested rotate all four road wheels as instructed and rebalance.*




Engine Compartment


Read out diagnostic system.


Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks. Check coolant level and antifreeze protection level; add coolant if necessary.
Note: Coolant must be replaced every 4 years (time interval begins from vehicle's production date).


Check level of brake and clutch fluid in reservoir. Add fluid if required.


Replace brake fluid every 2 years (timing interval begins from vehicle's production date).*


Check windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection. Fill up and/or correct if necessary.


Check air conditioner operation.


Replace microfilter(does not apply to M roadster or M coupe)
Note:reduce replacement interval in dusty operating conditions.


Reset Service Indicator.




Body/Electrical Equipment


Check battery state-of-charge, and charge if required.*


Check lighting system, i.e., headlights, foglights, parking, back-up, license-plate, interior (including map reading lights), glove box, flashlight, illuminated make-up mirrors, luggage compartment lights.


Check instrument panel and dashboard illumination.


Check all warning/indicator lights, check control.


Check turn signals, hazard warning flashers, brake lights, horns, headlight dimmer/flasher switch.


Check wipers and washer system(s);wiper blades, washer jet positions.


Check condition and function of safety belts.


Check central locking/double lock.


Check operation of all latches.


Check heater/air conditioner blower fan, rear window defogger.


Check rear view mirrors.


Visually examine the SRS airbag units for torn covers, obvious damage or attachment of decals, decorations or accessories.


Activate automatic roll-over protection system (if equipped) via diagnostic link.
Note:First remove hardtop/lower top.




Final Inspection


Road test with check of brakes, suspension, steering, clutch/manual transmission or automatic transmission (except M3, M5, and Z8).

Thank you Ron and Randy for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate how much valuable info everybody contributes to this board.

My cars warranty ran out before inspection I, so I bought the extension. I want to make sure everything gets done right. I am not really worried, as my dealer is pretty good about service, but I want to be prepared.

Also the service adviser asked me "do you want us to check anything else?"
So I figure I'll make a list.
