My ED writeup - at last

First things first – here’s the link to the PHOTOS . No need to sign in to view.
I apologise in advance – we uploaded the albums in the reverse order so view all the albums and select the #1 first
Another disclaimer - there's lots

Day 1, Nov 17th - Ok, so we flew from Houston to Newark and then to Frankfurt. From there we took the ICE to Munich arriving about 2 PM. Checked into our hote (Marriott). A little snooze and then off to attempt to meet some other ‘festers’ at Aumeister. This didn’t work out too well – it was cold and dark and getting there by u-bahn and foot when unfamiliar with the area was a challenge. It reminded us of the movie Werewolf in London – stick to roads – keep off the moors
We made it though and the food was great. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be – no-one else made it for various reasons. We were so tired – and I was determined I was taking it easy that night so we could be up early for the big occasion so off we went back to the Marriott about 8 PM. Asleep by 9:30 PM

Day 2, Nov 18th – Well – what a surprise! We woke up and the snow was coming down pretty decently. It looked great and we later found out that it was Munich’s first snow for the season. It also cast a slight shadow of doubt over the route I was planning on taking later that day through the Austrian Alps. We made and executive decision and decided that the Alps were out – we would make a run of the day and head for the Northern Italian coast – around Genoa.
As a sidenote we only booked 2 nights on this whole trip – the first in Munich and the 3rd in Monte Carlo (they had a festival on there and rooms were scarce) so we were totally flexible.

We arrived at the ED Delivery Centre at 7:15 AM had breakfast and waited about 45 mins while they got my car in out of the snow and cleaned it up (I am guessing that’s what they did). Met and chatted with Ed (Eddiethecub) for a bit before Christian – the young delivery guy – called us to do the signing. He is a really nice young guy – unfortunately, his product knowledge needs to be further developed. When demonstrating the Comfort Access he insisted that the boot (trunk) needed to be opened with the button on the fob and also insisted the idrive screen could not be split.

Anyway – the car is amazing!

We hightailed it down south and by the time we were an hour or so out of Munich, the snow was gone. We had lunch in Salzburg up on the mountain and hung around there for a couple of hours.

Even while sticking with the run in guidelines, it was very comfortable cruising all day on 100 mph down through Austria and Italy. That was the longest distance covered in 1 day on the trip – we did 500 + Miles!
On the way down the mountain into Genoa I had a great run following a Porsche and an Audi - it was dark and they obviously knew the road. That was my first taste of how this car loves the curves. It was exhilerating and the handling blew my wife away - she was astounded - and I had an absolute ball - great adrenalin rush.
We arrived in Genoa after dark – and found it very much like Rome – scooters everywhere – crazy traffic – every man for himself.
We got the hell out of there and headed up the coast and found a fantastic hotel (using idrive and its integration with the paired Bluetooth phone) on the beach in Arenzano, Italiano. Great hotel and great location. Can’t say we are too wild about the Italian people in general – we found the same on our last trip too. A bit stand offish! Just our opinion – maybe we smelled

Day 3, Nov 19th – We were heading to Monte Carlo today which was about an hour up the Autobahn but we decided to stick with the coast road – we were in no hurry.

The northern Italy Coast is amazing – great little villages, nice beaches – great twisty roads – lots of bikes and scooters though.
We decided this would be a fantastic spot for a summer home.

On the way into Monaco we got the car washed – I wanted to get the crap off from the snow around Munich. Wash 1 of 2 for the trip.
We got into Monte Carlo at about 4 PM Very Opulent – lots of Yachts in town for the Celebrations. We booked into the Mirimar and then went sight seeing.
Had a nice night at the Casino (won 100 Euros ) and at the fair that was in town – but missed the fireworks display by 1 night!

Photos are
1. Nav and MP3- see Christian - screen does split
2. Yum - Gelato
3. There she is
4. Italian Beagle named Peggy
5. Italian Coast

Day 4 – Nov 20th – Today we are off to the French Provence. We left Monaco and drove through Nice and then up into the hills.

First stop St Paule de Vence. This place is amazing. So beautiful.

As we were leaving there I received a text message from a mate that there baby girl was just born – 2 months pre-mature – we were in shock. All is good and all are healthy.

Leaving there we headed to Vence and Tourettes sur Loup where we had lunch. Fantastic scenery, great driving and the people were nice.

Drove around the Pont du Loup and did a little bit of hiking down to the river. Had to work off some of the food intake – which was steadily increasing – love the food.

That night was going to be in Grasse but on arrival decided we didn’t like it so ended up in Valbonne – which was fantastic. Really picturesque little town and excellent ute little hotel in the square. The breakfast was amazing in this little room at the top of the hotel with a roof that opened up.

As a side note – turns out the owners father in law lives in Houston and has a Restaurant at the Galleria – need to look him up.

There are dogs everywhere in most places in Europe and it seems to be an accepted practice that they accompany owners into restaurants a nd pubs. My wife, Courtney wants to start up a business over there called ‘Me Chien et Moi’ (My dog and me)

(sorry the occasional one is sideways)
1. St Paul
2. Hiking
3. Hiking
4. Squatting - waiting
5. Nice Butt

Gorges du Verdon

Day 5, Nov 21st – Today we were off to the Gorges du Verdon – France's answer to the Grand Canyon – and it was spectacular. We went hiking into the Gorges and the running joke of the day was ‘Isn’t she Gorgeous’ (Gorges – Australian influence….. sorry)

I’m afraid I broke my compliance to the run in guidelines today (we were at about 700 miles) – although it was definitely justified. I was overtaking a car on one of the little twisties up there when I was suddenly confronted with a bus (pulled out of a parking area – must have been looking behind him for traffic – as you do) – consequently it was 7000 RPM’s in 2nd an 3rd accompanied by a lot of screaming and cursing from the wife. Fun for all. Another fine adrenalin rush

A lot of driving at slow speeds in mountainous, tiny windy roads was done this day.

Ended up at Avignon, France that evening and splurged with a stay at the Hotel d’Europe within the old town walls near the castle. Amazing place – the hotel and the castle. Very touristy though – and freezing!
First time I had to Valet – not too happy but I made an excuse to go to the Garage later and check for damage.

Fantastic dinner at a very cute French Restaurant. I tried Escargot – it was ok – just don’t chew them

1. Ahh - the morning sun on Monaco
2. Cute old building near Trigance
3. Do you think this'll work as our Christmas photo?
4.Trigance in te Background - this is my screensaver
5.Love these roads - Gorges Du Verdon

Day 6, Nov 22nd – Today was expected to be 1 of our longer driving days – and due to a stupid Navi input error on our behalf we made it even longer.

Off to the Pont du Gard today – a part of the aquaduct system in the south of France. Spectacular – but after the previous day’s scenery – a little let down. And it was freezing – nice biting wind!

We were heading to Vevey, Switzerland today – on the Lake Geneva. So off we went and plugged it into the Nav and away we went. About 2 PM that afternoon we were 12 miles from it – apparently. We had been a little remiss and had not changed the country from France to Switzerland – therefore we were 12 miles from Vevey, France!!! So we had to drive and extra 2 hours through the Swiss Mountains – which was actually fun for me – to get to the correct Vevey. About 90 miles out of our way! Whoops

Anyway, Vevey (Switzerland) was beautiful. Great views of the Alps, fantastic old town and nice people.
Had a great meal here – Nice steak still cooking on the Griddle/plate.
At the border crossing into Switzerland we were help up for about 15 minutes – not sure what – but the guard came back and joked that it is good that we aren’t on a wanted list – I agreed.

1. My steak in Vevey
2. View from our room (if you look carefully you'll see my car)

Heidelberg

Day 7 & 8, Nov 23rd and 24th – We headed to Heidelberg today – we love Heidelberg and if anyone knows of any job opening there – feel free to pass them on.

It was great to be back in Germany. And this is where I managed to open her up a few times. Traffic prevented a max run – but it felt amazingly stable at 140 mph.
The Christmas markets had started up the day of our arrival in Heidelberg – much to my wife’s delight. Sampled plenty of Gluhwein and spiked coffee (love the Bailey's) to help with the chilly weather.

Plenty of sightseeing here – the Schloss, the old town…. But sucks that Hockenheim was closed.

It snowed again on our last night here – very nice. I figure if it is going to be that cold – I want the snow to go with it!

We ate Bratwurst and Saurkraut until it was coming out of our ears at a little pub. There was also a group of guys celebrating a hunt of some sort that day and there was lots of joviality, music, traditional dress – it was great.

1. Yeehaw!
2. Speaks for itself
3. Bier - mmmmm
4. Striking up a tune
5. After some snow

Day 9 and the last day, Nov 25th - Today was spent heading the dreaded Frankfurt for drop off.

Got to Frankfurt, checked into the Courtyard Marriott and found a car wash – came up beautiful.

Dropped the car off about 2 PM and took the U bahn to Frankfurt city where we ate and shopped then it was back to the hotel – the waiting begins.

This was a wonderful experience and we are already planning our next one. I did a 3 year lease and we are planning on doing our next ED on our way to the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing – ready to go. Wonder what I’ll get?

1. Sweet!
2. This was the final figures (actually - add 2 miles - it was actually 1644 - we took this at the carwash)
3.Frankfurt - we liked Frankfurt

Thumbs up Here's a list of the beers we drank

We tried to keep a list but we know we missed some - here's what we noted and remember

Holzkirchnen
Kroenenbourg 1664
Binding
Heidelberger dark
Bitburger
Hofbrau
Paulner
Eisbock (is that right?)
Hefe Weizen
Weizenbock

And not 1 hangover the whole trip

I think that's it. Think I better duck up the road and get me some German beer now!

So, when will my car get here?

Great hotel and great location. Can’t say we are too wild about the Italian people in general – we found the same on our last trip too. A bit stand offish! Just our opinion – maybe we smelled
You are very courageous to have driven into Genoa at night time. Be glad you got the heck out of Dodge. I was unable to find any recommendations for hotels in Genoa in any of the guide books. I stayed south of Genoa in the town of Rapallo. It still turned out to be a piece crap hotel. Tried to spend 1 day walking around Genoa but got bored. I wanted to be able to say that I had been to Columbus' hometown. A documentary on TLC a month ago has debunked that. They claim that Columbus was really Catalan (Barcelona). One of the pieces of supporting evidence is that he always wrote to his family (brothers) and even to Genovese authorities in Castillian (Spanish)

How long did it take to go from the Genoa area to Montecarlo on the coastal road? It took me on the Autostrada 2 1/2 hours at over 100 MPH.

Yes - it was a last minute change of plans that sent us there - not fun!

We stayed about 30 mins from Genoa on te coast, left about 9 Am an didn't getinto Monte Carlo until after 4 PM - we didn't hurry though - stopped plenty.
