328i with air bag light constantly on

I'm considering getting this 2000 328i but the air bag light is constantly on. Any advice to get this fix myself if possible. Called the dealership and they gave me a very rough estimate that it could cost between $800 & $1400.

air bag light on

hi
HOW MUCH jees they said that without even seeing the car???
thats the worst WORST case
Right quick lesson Air bag controll unit does a test of the system when ya turn on ignition......its lookin for anomolies like high resistance in the firing circuits eg broken wires also checks to see if any of the pyrotechnics have been set off yadda yadda yadda if all is well it puts out the warning light
If I had a pound for every air bag light i corrected i wouldnt have to work for the stealership lol
My guess would be you have a high resistance in a connector ...usualy its the connector under either the drivers or the passengers seat ...there is a modified wiring loom to fix it basicaly its 2 lengths of twin core twisted wire with a connector to join them one solders to the cars loom and the other goes to the seat belt pre-tensioner
When its fitted the light will need to be reset , personaly i dont know of a way to do this without using a dealer but no doubt someone out there knows of a way to do it
The other thing i fit lots of is the occupancy sensor mat ...basicaly its a mat that is just under the cloth or leather seat cover on the passengers seat and tells the control unit when there is someone sitting in that seat ...these can fail we do fit quite a few
Basicaly the majority of faults are caused by poor connections ....$800 + jees they are havin a giggle on ya (unless they know somat i dont like the control unit is shot and the air bags have been deployed etc etc
I would say about 20 each for the looms and about 80 ish for the sensor mat ..the looms are about 30 min per side to fit and the mat is about 1 to 1.5 hours as you have to remove the seat cover etc
Let me know if this helps

You could buy a Peake tool for $150 and reset the light yourself...it's possible that someone took the seats out at some point and had the keys in the ignition at the time. A simple reset would clear that code.

That being said, that's the easy way out.

Airbag light on

I replaced my window regulator in the driver side door, and I thought it would be a good idea to test it before I put the door panel back on the door. I reconnected the battery, turned the key, and operated the window without the driver side airbag connected. Now I'm stuck with the airbag light on even though I connected everything back the way it was including the airbag and the door panel. I guess it's time to buy a reset tool.

Radio, cruise control died and airbag and seatbelt light are on at the same time. I checked the battery. It is new and connections are good. all fuses are good, however the fuse for airbag, cruise control and radio which are right next to each other are not getting any power. I will now check the relays in the main fuse box under the hood. I am waiting for my friend to help me. Relays are the heart of electrical system of our cars and the sourse of power. You to be very careful. If you srew up, it can become very expensive. You will need a relay diagram. Go to www.spaghetticoder.org/bmw/wds/e46/ to get it. Read it carefully or have someone help you before opening the main fuse box. It is right by the brake fluid on the right hand side by the windshield. You have to open the cover. I have 328i 2000.

I have already gone through three occupancy sensors, and am going to try to fix this one myself.

Wow I love the diag of airbag lights without reading the codes.....lol
I would advise to read the code then fix what the code says us wrong......not hoping it is a wiring issue with one of the seat belt buckles or oc seat mats.

Today, I successfully warded off the dreaded airbag light simply by putting an odd number of cloves from this head of garlic in the inside of my driver's side door panel!

Airbag lights are a common problem and often just require to be reset by the dealer, or there are tools you can buy to do it. In my case (330CiC) the airbag light came on as a result of having disconnected the battery when fitting the OEM car alarm. There was no fault found and the airbag light has functioned correctly since.

The dealer should be able to tell you if there is a permanent fault as it will show up on their test equipment.

I've read (so I don't know this first hand) that the cost for a dealer diagnostic is about the same as the cost for the diagnostic tool (Peake?) that will tell you the same thing and will reset the light.

If that's true (someone let me know if I err), then it would be folly, from a DIY standpoint, to go to the dealer for an airbag diagnostic test.

Is this logic correct?

Hi. If your airbag light comes on when someone sits on the seat an easy fix is one of these- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E46-E39-E3...item20b715fe96 . Easier and cheaper than a new matt in the seat. Jim
