Waite for 2007 or buy now a 2005 6K<invoice

I have a delima to buy now or waite for the 2007 and lease it or buy the 2006 at about the same discount I'm assuming that they have for the 2005. This is for a 4.4 alpine white with black interior. Good discount but still a lot of $$$.

I've never liked first year production vehicles. I mean, it's not a civic where everything stays the same. You've seen the problems occuring on the new 3-series I assume.

Socaltiger, if you could clarify a point. Are you saying you can get a new 2006 4.4 x5 for $6K under invoice or just a left-over '05? The former makes no sense for a dealer to offer as of now. The latter is a real possibility. But consider this. We turned down a leftover '05 (fairly well equipped) because we didn't like the color combo (specifically its grey interior). Dealer still wanted to keep around $2K of the approx. $6K BMW trunk money, so the cost to us would have been $4K under invoice. Still great but not as significant for the following reasons: a) You give it all back and then some when you sell it down the road. The typical KBB appreciation hit is perhaps over $10K p/y in first few years. b) To take advantage of the now expired BMW trunk money offer on leftover 2005s, dealer had to punch car as sold as last day of offer / approx end of September 2005. So your factory warranty started as of that date. Minor point but one that should also be considered. About the only advantage is that you can put "extra" miles since you can drive 30K miles in one year and it will be considered normal a year from now as a two model year old vehicle. In the end, we decided to order a new '06 to our specs at $2k over invoice. The lost savings over the missed opportunity on the '05 was only $6,000 but we will get that back (if you want to look at it that way) when we sell it down the road as an '06. The other question you posed is perhaps harder to answer. The '07s should offer a new look and improved technology, if only because they will use as a base the improved new 5 platform. The anticipated extra length will add weight which will hopefully be compensated by added power, but that is not a recipe for improved handling in any vehicle (think of it as the Cayennitis syndrome). So I am concerned at some level. If you can wait for an '08 it is better since some bugs might be worked out by that time. We couldn't wait, period. We sold our Audi RS6 and needed a winter vehicle now to tackle our treks up & around our Reno-Tahoe home. Good luck with your decision.

This is for a 2005 leftover. The color is apline white or silver with black leather. The only thing I don't care for is they come with nav. I'm leaning more toward waiting till 2006 and get a glimpse at the 2007 before I make my decision. I'm hoping it will be at the LA auto show on Jan.6 and I'll make my decision then to purchase a 2006 in the summer when it is discounted or lease the 2007.

They haven't said a single thing about it yet... in other words, it definately WILL NOT be at any autoshow on January 6, 2006.

Wow, you sound pretty sure that it won't be at the auto show! I'll go see the show just for the heck of it anyways. A member has posted some pics but who knows what it is going to actually look like and it seems that everything is just speculation for now.

I know the Nav is not as good as Acura or others, but it is a pretty nice option. I love mine. I will never buy another vehicle without it. (well maybe I shouldn't say never, There are quite a few nice used Z4's out there at really good prices right now )

I agree with Sarafil. It would be stupid for BMW to even talk about the new generation X5 at this early stage (LA or Detroit Auto Show in January), much less bring a prototype to show off. It would seriously damage the prospects for a healthy market for the second half of the '06 model year (which will be in production until late September '06). And the X5 is a very profitable part of their operation, specially in the US market. So you will not see the '07 prototype at a show anytime soon. There may be some hint of the future at the Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland this Spring. But we will have to wait and see.

Lease now and get the New x5 in 08 or 09

The first year of a new production run always has problems.

I would lease a new X5 now or in July (when they offer the best lease deals) and get the new X5 in two or three years.

The only real issue with the current X5 is storage space behind the second seat.

If you have a large family this may be a issue otherwise the current X5 is great.

Yes, the storage space is a little concern but my wife doesn't want to drive something too big either. I'm a little torn right now since it is the end of the year and I can get a good purchase price on a 2005 and be able to get a tax deduction on most of the purchase price this year on my tax return. It is countdown until December 31st for me.
