6 Series
The BMW 6 Series builds on BMW's sporty heritage with aggressive lines and an incredible motor to back the design up. Available in coupe and convertible trims with a standard 4.8 liter engine producing 360 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque, the 6-series is a popular choice that exceeds expectations.

Passenger Airbag Auto-Cutoff

I have now been told by two dealers and BMW N.A. that the passenger airbag on the 650i has a sensor in the passenger seat that senses whether or not the seat is occupied and will not deploy the airbag if the seat is empty or if the passenger is too light to trigger the minimum weight setting. Part of the reason for this is to satisfy the insurance industry by preventing unnecessary deployment and thereby avoiding the need to replace the expensive airbag when it wasn't needed. Like MalibuBimmer, I would like to have my eight year old ride in the front seat. My concern of course is the weight cut-off and how reliable is this. I have been unable to get more specific information. Does anyone know more about this?

In the X3, they put in a light that comes on in the overhead that shows if the airbag is on or off. Good idea. Not sure why it did not make to all the models.

The 650i has a light. If it's on, the bag is off.

Yep, it's on the overhead console, on the passenger's side. If the front passenger's seat is occupied, it lits up.

I have put my daughter in the front seat to test this. There is the airbag light up above, even on the convertible. She weighs in around 65 lbs. The light does not go on, so the airbag is not deactivated.
