Cost of oil change

Does anyone know how much it costs to do an oil change outside of the scheduled maintenance at the dealer?

I had one done in the SF Bay Area at about 5K miles. I think the cost was around $75.

Look Out

I haven't reached the end of the warranty service on my X3 yet, but I still remember the first scheduled maintenance on my 528i after the warranty ran out. Over $400 for a "oil change". Needless to say I did it myself after that. The amazing thing is I still had the service ticket from the warrenty ones and the cost of all the parts (filters, oil, etc.) doubled when I started paying for it.

Stupid question, but I assume you can't just get the $19.95 oil change at your local quickie lube? I know the X3 uses synthetic oil, which is more expensive, but the numbers you guys are quoting seem high.

Chief...

The numbers above are accurate...between $75 to $105 depending on dealership. The $19.95 is for regular oil...even Jiffy Lube/Pep Boys, etc will charge more for synthetic...Don't know how much though.

Personally i don't change my oil until the indicator on the dash tells me its time...then the stealership does it for free...

I bought the oil (7 qts) and the oil filter from my dealer's parts department... With the 20% CCA discount, it came to $37 including tax...

So, no... I don't think you'll get it changed for $19.95 at Jiffy Lube.. Even there, I'd guess around $60-$70....

There is "oil change" and "oil service".

The oil change is under $100 on average.

The oil service is several hundred and not sure what all it entails. I suspect it is very close to Inspection I.

I too live in the DC metro area, and I know that Passport BMW charges $75.45 for the synthetic oil and filter change on my 540iA. That is the price for the oil change for a 530, 540, 740, 750, 840, 850 models according to my invoice from Passport. I hope this helps.

use the following link to change the oil yourself. its pretty painless to do yourself if you're handy. its just the cost of an oil filter and synthetic oil.

Dealer vs. Jiffy Lube cost for full synthetic oil & filetr change

I just took my '05 X3 to Braman BMW in West Palm for a full synthetic oil and filter change-I would be paying for this one since the car recently went out of warranty-they quoted me $189.95!!!!!!!! I said no-thanks and took it to Jiffy Lube for a full synthetic at a cost of $79.95 for a 5-quart change plus an additional $14 for the extra oil. Total of $93.95.

BMW of Columbia charges $130 for an oil change. I was out of warranty but they comped me for it since they kept my car a week for the air bag sensor recall. The indy I went to at 45K charged $75.

Sorry if this is a stupid question or I missed it but how do you reset the "Oil Service" interval after a DIY oil change? I have an old write-up that spells this procedure, is it the right one?

X3 2004-2006 Turn ignition off. Press and hold left hand button to the right of the speedometer. Turn ignition to the "I" position. Continue to hold button until
OIL SERVICE or "INSPECTION" is displayed. Release button. Press and hold button again until "RESET" or "RE" flashes. Release button. Press
button again. New interval is displayed. Press button once more. "END SIA" is displayed.

That is the procedure.

Although, similar to most household equipment with a little LCD screen, it never actually says "RESET", but something odd like that with a combination of upper and lower case letters.

One thing you have to watch for is that you reset the service reminder that you want to change.

If the Inspection reminder comes up first while you are pressing that left button, you have to cycle through

Not a big deal if you are out of the free scheduled maintenance term, or if you don't think the distance to the next service is correct anyway.

Not to confuse the issue, but I am not sure if we have the time-based reminders on the X3 as well (e.g. brake fluid flush).
I though I saw that once, but cannot bring it up now.
The full and official reset procedure, not specifically for the E83 is:

around me is about the same $95 to $135. Now that I know how to reset the "Oil Service" I might start doing it myself. Is the X3 oil filter the same has an e36 99 323?

I changed my own oil in my '07 X3, yesterday, for the first time. I am very happy to report that it was relatively easy and went without a hitch. With my 10% BMW CCA discount, the 7 qts of oil and filter kit (including two O-rings and the plug washer), cost $53 even, including tax (in NJ). I did this at the half-way point for the "15k" service interval. I'm so glad it went well and look forward to doing it myself again in about 15k miles!

Buy BMW oil at the dealer and an oem filter online cheap and then go to an indy shop and they will charge like 20 to change it.

I am comfortable doing a DIY oil change.

However, my X3 is CPO...will it affect warranty of the dealer does not do the service during the CPO warranty period?

My local dealer (Stevens Creek BMW, Santa Clara) often has an $89.95 "special". (Maybe it's a permanent "special".)
