Mein Auto: Jet Black 650i
First day, new 650. Impressions...

Well first off THANK YOU Malibubimmer for the congratulations!

A million things to say but here goes ...

* Jet Black
* Heads Up Display
* Satellite Radio
* Sport Package
* Premium Sound
* Beige Interior with Dark "Wood" trim
* Cold weather package

Would have traded in Cold Weather and Heads Up for Active Steering but beggars can't be choosers. There isn't a damn 650 left on the market right now, and the 5 on the boat are already claimed. Im very happy with the options I got.

In the dealership, several 50 yr old men scowled at me as they looked at their 5 series' and I was meekly getting into my 650. I am 31 and look about 24, so I am sure they were confused and a little annoyed. Then again, this was Beverly Hills. Maybe thats just how they look all day. Beverly Hills BMW staff was stellar. Nicest bunch of guys ever. Very real. Great conversationalists. Very friendly. One guy spent a good 30 mins showing me how to use iDrive features. Honestly guys it seems pretty damn simple to me. Only "snafoo" (snafu?) was when he tried to manually change the frequency. It didn't display the actual digital numbers of the radio frequency. It was just blank in that area. He had to reboot it, and that fixed it.

The ride home was fun. Got stared at by at least 3 cute girls, one of which was in ahead of me at a stoplight and hanging out her window looking back. That was cool. Spent the entire 2.5 hour drive home using my non-approved Cell phone over the car speakers with blue tooth. Phone works fine even though it is not on the approved list. Just can't load the phone book. Of course had the navigation running, and chatting away with friends, and just amazed at the smoothness of the ride. I didn't even try to punch the gas this time around. Just enjoyed floating on air and effortlessly cruising the 5 south with the ocean on my right side. Very nice.

Issues: The only thing that seems to suck so far about iDrive is the retard with the hearing problems. Specifically, the voice recognition system that consistently doesn't understand what I am saying well over *half* of the time. I am not sure if I will get fed up with that or not, but even the dealer was trying to show me how it works and it repeatedly said it could not understand him, though the car was dead silent and we were not driving. Is this something I might ask them to fix or is it something I can not change?

Of course people's comments I'd seen about the seatbelt being way too far back, came to mind. They are right. Its just very very poorly placed. Major pain in the ass sometimes to reach it.

This may seem really odd, but I have a BOSE sound system in my Audi, and I was not impressed with the premium sound in this car. For the first hour driving, it was so uncomfortable to listen to, that my ears were actually hurting. The bass is just too damn strong, and i *LOVE* bass. But its overbearing in relation to the other tones. I changed the bass from "half" to just 1 or 2 notches, and my ears finally felt a relief. I could physically feel it. I messed with the equalizer, and still couldn't get a deep rich full sound. The louder the volume, the more obvious it was. Don't get me wrong - at low to medium volumes, this system sounds amazing. Very pleasant. But as you can tell by my Avatar, I have a certain type of music I like ... and loud just doesn't seem to work with this sytem. Even when messing with "Orchestra" and other settings.

Last sorta issue is that after my first 2.5 hr drive, my rims are already covered in break dust, and you can tell from even several feet away. Getting new rims ASAP anyways, so we'll see how that goes.

Driving in the rain? Well ... it sprinkled a little

I will have a million questions all week, Im sure. I hope you stock OEM fans wont get annoyed with the Mods I do. I definitely have some in mind. Ill be avoiding ghetto as much as possible however. The word "pimp" isnt in my vocabulary.

One can always find something wrong ... but this is an amazing and beautiful car, and these minor things are almost non-issues compared to the incredible number of plusses.

Great report. Great options on the car. I think black is probably the best color in this car, and I've got the Monaco blue, which I ordered sight unseen. HUD is great. I wish I had it. I do have AS, which I really like, but BMW steering without AS is awfully good, too. I don't have premium sound because I don't think any manufactuirer can do it right except, maybe, Lexus.

You say you re-booted. How did you do that? If it's the way we re-boot, did the Beverly Hills people tell you how to do it, or did you learn it from the Board? (Pressing the eject buttons on the DVD and CD at the same time as pressing the radio button.)

He did some Magic Ninja Mind Trick maneuver of some kind with his fingers. I was so impressed that I wasn't quite able to see exactly what he was doing. I do know his fingers were all fckd up in some awkward stretching positions and he had to use two hands, and hold it for a few seconds. Thats the best I can give ya.

Im loving the big huge red siren light under the rear view mirror. Any particular reason its the size of a top hat, when the light itself is a mere pin prick? Cracked me up... weirdest thing on this car so far

The red thing? It's called the clown's nose! Why is it so big? Good question, but clowns' noses are always big! I sure wish I knew how the Beverly Hills guy re-booted. Can you find out? You may need it some day (I hope not), and the way my iDrive works I know I will need it!

Great job! Making old men envious is a great past time. It'll soon be us who are the old men, so enjoy while it lasts. I am 34 and look 27 so I piss off quite a few folks myself. Just had some coffee with some friends and the males there all had this angry growl while the women had the meek sideways glances but not direct looks. It's definitely attention grabbing when a younger looking guy drives one!

A/S is now an option for $1000, sport package cost has been reduced. Some folks did not want A/S.

I think when A/S first came out, people did not fully understand it. They thought it was just variable ratio steering.

It is integrated with DSC/ARS, all the handling electronics. I never drove a 6 series without it, so I have nothing to compare to. However, I have it, I like it a lot, especially when slowing into a tight curve, I feel everything tighten up.

Yeah - to be honest - heads up display is neat for about 30 seconds, then you realize everything it shows you is also located in about 14 other places right in front of you. So given another chance I might have opted for Active Steering instead, but my impatience impedes me from using logic most of the time.

I will call and find out how he did the reboot. I believe you hit it on the head with your description.

CHUCK and BILLKACH - what parts of San Diego do you frequent with your car? Im in the Eastlake area. I did see one here just a week or so ago. Black.

I live in the downtown area. I see maybe 2 or 3 per week. Very exclusive car in these parts.

I like the HUD, you will appreciate it more the longer you have it. You will be bale to have the wheel in any position and it can block all the gauges but any criticalinfo will be displayed in the HUD.

Prior to HUD, I was constantly moving my hands and looking through the wheel to see my speed.

However, choosing between HUD and A/S would be a tough choice.

Im sitting here not sure what to do first.

I've heard people imply that I need to hurry up and get a protectant onto the car. First it needs to be washed though. I've got a detailer coming tomorrow.

What should I have him do? Anything special since its brand new?

Depends on how much sleep I had, I can look as old as 32... or I can put on sweats and a backwards baseball cap and look 24. Noxzema does wonders for skin.

Great car, great choices, congrats and welcome to 6er land.

But I detect just a hint of buyers remorse. The remorse seems over perhaps not getting al the options just as you wanted. Seems to me to be the difference between 'snappers and geezers. We know what we want and will be patient to ensure we get what we want. 'snappers appear to be a little impatient and won't wait. And too know the look of envy as these old bones get in my 6er while the youngsters pick up their 3s and 5s.

I don't know if I am a geezer yet (just had 47th birthday), but I remember after I bought my car that my partner asked if I had buyer's remorse the next day? My answer then and still today is the same - Absolutely Not!
