iPod connection

Has any one figured a way to connect their Ipod to a '06 750 il?
My dealer says 'its coming' but seems like there should be a way today.

But if you want a short concise answer, no not now, atleast. Dension is looking for a way to have a flawless iPod integration with the car but no luck yet, stereo wiring the car is very secure and hard to tap into. Your best bet, right now, is to go to your dealer and have them install an Auxillary Jack, 3.5mm plug?, in the glovebox or center console, which ever you prefer. Thats about the only way you will get iPod in the 7 any time soon.

will we have ID3 text on the iDrive? would iDrive show all our playlists? could we use iDrive to control iPod for song/album/genre selection? would anything need to b e disconnected (such as cd changer, etc) to get iPod working? i am super excited about it. just curious: have you gotten any help from BMW on this development? are they for it, against it or just neutral?

Still too early to tell on the features, but BMW does not have any involvement in the ice>Link Plus.

as a consumer, having two to pick from will be good. but i do like that nav-tv is planning to make ipod appear as a 7th CD in the changer and let idrive controller pick playlists, artists, etc.

The problem is that AUX does not exist for the 7-series. We're told that BMW has no plans for an AUX kit in the 7-series.

I heard a rumor Siemans was close to making a full integration for it.

Actually, the MOST bus interface already has a pretty rich API definition to support AUX in functionality with pretty sophisticated control and response info from the device. In fact, it's got all the trappings to support MP3 players with a database of songs or a file system (i.e. the IPOD). So, really, its a matter of whether it is worth BMWs time to implement it in their iDrive system code or not. I'm sure the chipsets for the interface are all available, it's a matter of BMWs iDrive subcontractors doing the job (and BMW paying for it).

You can be sure that BMW keeps a pretty quantified cost/profit analysis on features such as this and probably goes even further to profile the typical buyers of their high-end cars and thus far hasn't seen the dollar signs to do such a thing. I bet if you looked at the numbers, 3, 5, and X series drivers are more likely to use iPods in there estimation and that sort of feature is considered more valuable to that segment, not to mention the fact that the sophistication of a fiber-optic based MOST bus hasn't completely trickled down to the mainstream models.

However, there is some hope from some of the hackers out there beyond Denison, I have seen on Ebay a company which sells an interface to provide a video input to the iDrive screen which also provides a direct analog AUX in. The only drawback is that this requires you to send in your MOST Radio receiver to them which they crack open and tap directly into the board with analog inputs. Not pretty and no iDrive control, but the only game out there aside from a FM modulator.

I have a feeling that Denison's box will only work with the later model 7s which have the option for playing MP3 files from the Alpine CD-Changer. I don't see any other way for them to be able to offer a degree of control over the iPod as well as displaying track information on the iDrive screen (translated as ID3 tags). The drawback to this is your ipod appears like 6 CDs with 99 songs on them.

So we will have to wait, and hope that BMW will offer something. Apple does a good job of providing a pretty slick interface to control the iPod through the dock connector, there just isn't many people yet who take good advantage of it yet.

Then again, I'd just be happy with getting a direct audio-in, because I don't think that the iDrive controller could work as good as the iPod's click wheel at picking out songs. .

Maybe, just maybe, one day BMW will open up some of the API of the iDrive system to third party developers so that people could write custom software for the iDrive system. . granted they'd have to protect all of the vital systems responsible for safety purposes but I'd sure like a crack at improving their interface and adding some cool stuff to the system.

Ah well, time will march on and these things will happen. . but you'll need to spend another 80K on a new car to get them. . hehe. . lest we forget these guys are in the business of selling new cars. .

Best solution for now is to buy extra cartridges and have all 6 slots loaded up with MP3s!

I was told by the dealer that there is no AUX input for the 2006 750i. Anyone hear something different?

yep, there is no AUX input on 7er. BmW745On19 is smoking some good stuff.

I actually called the BMW parts department like 2 days ago, they said that they wouldnt know anything about an iPod adapter, figures, but did say for the 745 that there was an AUX input avaliable to install.

750, not so sure.

745 DO NOT have an AUX input either. i used to own a 745 before my 750. call them back and get a part number and i'll admit i am wrong.

This is correct - we have been told that BMW has no plans for an AUX adapter for the 7.

I assume this is a misunderstanding. I am clear that BMW doesnt have an AUX ADAPTER for the 7 but BMW does have an AUX INPUT for the 7, the 3.5mm jack you can have installed in the glove box. Ill call Reeves again and get you a part number if you dont believe me.

It's not that I don't believe you. I called my dealer, Hunterdon BMW, and they specifically told me that BMW does not make an AUX input for the '06 750. I have the 3.5mm jack in the glove box of my '03 540i and it works great. If you could get a part number for me, I would appreciate it.
