Satellite and Aux Line both working - Nav Sys not!

Well, after eight days the dealer finished installing the Aux line and Satellite Radio. Both work great. But, the Navigation System is now out of whack. It shows my position and direction, but neither are close. I am just not sure that I want to take it back. I know this area pretty well and don't really need it enough for another dealer visit. Plus I have heard that this is not uncommon. I was told that it happened to a friendís 7 and another's Range Rover. They both said the Navigation System went out when the Satellite Radio was installed. Any thoughts Dave?

I have not tried that yet. Is it CD and DVD Eject buttons and the press the volume knob?

Yes. It's also the radio on/off button. I think if you do it too many times it sinks your iDrive. I am the poster child of CTRL, ALT, DEL re-booting. I have now been re-downloaded twice (or so I have been told).

I have never done it. I just don't want to screw anything else up by doing it. Has anyone had something go wrong by doing it?

Nope, I would also try ejecting the nav cd and re-inserting. Sounds dumb but you never know.

I was riding in a friend's 350z one day and the Nav showed us in the ocean. . After jacking with different things it finally corrected itself.

It is one thing to be under water on a car loan, but this is rediculous.

Chuck92103 says "nope," but he doesn't know for sure. We may be degrading the stability of the already unstable Microsoftcrap OS. So, we really don't know what we are doing by re-booting. Chuck92103, bless his San Diego heart, really doesn't know, and once he sees this post, he will fall to his knees and confess.

As a serial abuser of the re-boot, I can tell you it didn't help my iDrive. While I am tempted to re-boot whenever I have a glitch (once every drive), I restrain myself.

OK, Chuck92103, fess up. Let's see some contrition.

PS: I think there may be a way to re-calibrate your Navigation. Take a peek in your owner's manual!

Tried the re-boot. No go. When I zoom in, there are no roads on the screen, only different colored areas. Plus, the north arrow is pointing the wrong way. And I did eject the disc and put it back in. At least it shows me still being in the Las Vegas Valley.

After having the dealer have my car for eight days this month, I just don't want to take it back in right now. I can live without the Navigation. But I am going to La Jolla next week and it would be nice to use it.

Sh!t, Tio, I forgot you were in Vegas. Since "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," your Nav will never work there. It can't get out!

Come on Mal, I was fessing up.

I tried it once to see if it would work and it did, much like I tried the secret screen.

I have been fortunate with my idrive no having issues. But I am still the curious type.

One more thing to try, is the DVD disc clean?

Also, try entering a destination to see if it calculates correctly.

Also, note my car is a 645 not a 650, so you mileage may vary.

I also drive a 645 and Love it! I did take out the disc and clean it. It just seems strange that there are no streets except the freeway showing up on the screen. Does anyone know when the new navigation disc for 2006 will be released?

I assume you have zoomed down to the street level and are not in perspective mode which does not show streets only freeways.

Correct. When I zoom out all the way I get Freeways and it shows Vegas, LA and San Francisco. When I zoom in to 400 feet I get a grey color, but no streets. And the north arrow is pointing in the wrong direction.

Sounds like the GPS antenna was disconnected during the aux install. Very strange indeed.

One of my worst suggestions ever, but maybe to save time and avoid leaving your car in the shop for another week, ask them if you can come in and swap in a new DVD. Maybe its the disc. Longshot. Might be a quick and easy fix though.

Without the DVD Nav disc inserted, the car should still have GPS working and display in the information window.

When they installed the Aux line, they did update the software correct?

They say they updated the software. The disc is dated 2004, but it worked before they installed the Aux Line and the Satellite.

Logical suggestion, Nevervana, but since BMW can't make any money off it, it's not going to happen. (Remember, his DVD is a couple years old.) Also, I think Chuck92103 may have put his finger on it. It's either a disconnected antenna, a failure to re-initialize Nav on the iDrive, or a Nav system that needs re-calibration. Since the re-calibration (I think) can be done by reading the owner's manual and following directions, it is the last thing Tio will try!

I just took a drive and the Navigation System worked perfect. Then I stopped and when I got back in, it was messed up again. I currently have the manual out. I didn't realize that I could calibrate it myself. Thanks for the suggestion Mal.

Mal, I could not find any information on calibrating the Nav Sys in the owner's manual. Is there any other source that you know about. Any suggestions Cobradav?
