Inspection II @ 40K miles right?
That is what I remember reading in the OM. Recently I had some tires mounted/balanced at a reputable german auto shop and there was a note on the work order that Inspection II due at 30K (car has 28.5K miles) miles. It's 40K right? Even so, the OBC is still showing 4 green bars, not yellow or red. Hmmmm.....

I believe inspection 2 comes at 30k miles or two years whatever comes first. I think there should be something in your owners manual with a maintenance schedule.

Inspection I comes at 30,000 miles or two years, Inspection II comes at 60,000 miles. One oil change in between

JD-
Let me I'll check my E36 Bentley manual. The HACK is probably correct re: the E46 service schedule but I believe the E36 has shorter intervals. I'll check and email you tonight. Tom |

Post 96 Models:
9-10k Oil Service 18-20k Inspection 1 27-30k Oil Service 36-40k Inspection 2 (Differential Service and Clutch check performed every second Inspection 2) And then the cycle repeats. Also: Brake Fluid Flush every 2 years, Coolant Flush every 3 years. |

May I add (so you dont think they are that incompetant!) that the pre 96 models have a shorter service interval. The interval is about 7500 miles. Therefore you have an Inspection I at 15k and an Inspection II at 30k. On these cars, the transmission and differential is serviced at every Inspection II.

My car got the free oil change at 1 yr (since miles were too low to get sooner) and I am going to hit 2 yrs old this July. Will I just get the inspection II and they will skip inspection I ? or . . . Should I call and insist on an Inspection I now ?? |

15k- oil and filter 30k- Inspection 1 45k- oil and filter 60k- Inspection 2 (no spark plugs until 100k except the M cars) Brake Flush- 2 yrs Coolant Flush- 4 yrs |

Hey Alan.. sorry to confuse you further, but you WON'T get an Inspection 1 if you are only going to be at 15k. You will get a BMW Engine Oil Service (aka "15k") They did an Early Oil Service, which should NOT include a reset of the service lights nor a full oil service. It should just be an oil and filter. It is done after 12 months. You are the typical example of why BMW created that service. Anyway, you won't get an Inspection 1 until you are near 30k miles. Sorry to confuse you. Let me know if you need more help.

So even though I got the first oil change at 1 yr, I'll only get another oil change at 2 yrs . . . well what can I do . . . free oil changes is better than no oil changes at all !!! That's a good point that I'm the reason why BMW created that service . . . they probably figure guys like me even out the scale for guys with higher mileage !! |

You have to go by the service lights or the mileage to get the serviece covered by BMW. I was just saying that at 15000 it is way too early for the service. If you drive very agressively it is not unheard of to be due for that service at 23-24k. The average, however, is 30k. That said, Alan is a low mileage driver. After 1 year, BMW will do a low mileage annual oil change. When the lights go out, or after the 2nd year, BMW will to the full oil service. At that rate, he wont get an inspection 1 until roughly 30k miles (could be sooner, just an example) or 4 years. Thats just how it works out.

Alan, you dont have to wait a year. Its either a year from the last service, or when the lights go out. Example: You have a low mileage annual service at 9000 miles. Six months later, the service indicator hits 0. You then go in for the full service, even though its only been 6 months. You will go for your first service when the service indicator goes to 0 or when you are a year from your last service, whichever is sooner.

Now I understand 100% . . . thanks for filling me in. I had thought the service guy forgot to reset my indicater but now I understand why he didn't reset it at the first yr service Thanks again for taking the time to explain it to me !!! |

Not a problem. Now if this was the 'org, someone would have said RTFM already. Either that or you question would have been buried somewhere between a posting about how people who drive 325iA's dont have real BMWs and about how the IS300 is better than the BMW.
Let me know if you have anymore questions. |
