Is my dealer lying to me? Re: ED out of Allocation?

Last night I stopped by my local dealer to do a final test drive of a 5 Series. His information on the 07 E60s lead me to believe he didn't know what he was talking about, but his story was: Since the factory is shutting down to re-tool for 07 production, he has to sell ED E60s out of his allocation (and therefore can't deal). This directly contradicts what I've read here - that the only cars to come out of allocation for ED are M's. He also seemed to think that 07 E60s wouldn't be in the US until August, which also seems to be a bit off. I would have guessed mid May at the latest. In fact, I believe supply is constrained on E60s now because of the re-tool at the factory. Too bad as I was ready to place an order yesterday.

So my question is:

Does the factory retooling change what cars come out of allocation vs. non-allocation for Euro Delivery?

Should I find an LA dealer who understands ED better?

Thanks all, I'm closing in on joining your ranks!

Which E60 you looking at? I did hear from a friend of mine that there are no more 06 530xi available from ED pool, car has to come from dealer's allocation. No such problems for 06 530i or 530xit.

E60 525/530/550 cars DO NOT normally come out of allocation.

Also, factory re-tooling doesn't happen until much later in the MY...

Interestingly, they can come out of allocation if the BMW ED is out of allocation which the last I heard they were running very low.

They only come out of allocation at BMW ED's request. The center gives them one and then BMW ED gives back the allocation the following month.

March production 07 E60's should arrive in April.

Unless you want to pick up in March (and get an 06 esp. if you're planning on leasing), wait until late April onward and get an 07.

That is interesting . . . how often does BMW ED re-evaluate/refresh their inventory? I'd like to pick up in late May, do you think ED inventory will refresh by end of February?

If you want to do an ED on a 2006 model at this point, the car will come from the dealer's allocation as the ED department has no more available allocations for 2006 E60.

A 2007 is what I am after, so that would be my preferred outcome anyway!

And what is the allocation system? They just get a certain % of production of each model, and once that allocation is gone for a given time period any ED orders have to wait? So it's like another (really big) dealer?

How do you know when your order is confirmed?

Is it when you receive the first ED "Thank you for your order" packet?
When you receive the ED clock?
When you receive production number?
When you receive the VIN?
When you receive the packet 2 weeks prior to delivery?
Some other time?

I expect it would be a problem for those who made travel plans based on one of the things above, thinking that their order was confirmed, only to have their order not proceed due to allocation or other issues.

When your CA tells you its been confirmed. This happens within a week of your order if he/she is diligent.
