Need Sirius on new 05 330i

I'm going through Sirius withdrawals and need to get it installed. Dealer wants $700

Yeah that might happen. I saw some threads regarding an install, but I'm not sure if it's relevant to an 05. I have the shark fin thing on the top of the car, I hear that is the satallite attenna,

The dealer wants $275 for the receiver, does anybody know of a discount online source? Is anything else needed?

The dealer says that the head unit needs to be reprogrammed, thus the dealer must do the install. They claim its a two hour job and will cost of $200. Is this true?

Thanks

I just did the install myself (today) in an '05 E46 and it was pretty easy. No reprogramming of the head unit was necessary.

I ordered the parts from Circle BMW in New Jersey. You may live close to there and wouldn't have to order by mail.

Receiver was $229.95
Antenna was $ 45.00
Install Kit was $ 45.00

$319.95
Shipping $ 16.60

Total $336.55

The car is pre-wired so you basically just bolt the unit in place, find the wires, and plug it in. Of course you have to install the antenna too but that's not hard either and plug it in also. There are a lot of posts here that will be very helpful if you do it yourself.

The shark fin contains a telephone antenna and GPS antenna for the BMWAssist and for Nav (if you have it) but it does not have a built-in Sirius antenna on the E46. You'll have to add that as well as the receiver.

Beleive it or not, Princeton BMW had told me that the shark fin was also for the satallite on the 05. Where did you put the antenna?

I believe that's true on the E90.

I put it on the back pacakge shelf. I removed the center child seat anchor, threaded the cable through the hole and ran it under the package shelf to the receiver unit on the left rear of the car. Then I reinstalled the child anchor. I didn't get rid of the anchor as some here have said they did. It can still be used but I used the hole to get the antenna from the trunk to the top side of the package shelf.

So far it's working fine and the car is still inside the garage behind a metal garage door so I think it's going to work fine with the antenna inside the car.

It's also apparently true on the X3, from what I read a few months back when I was doing research. I did the same install on my '05 just before the holidays last year. Love it!!

I have my Terk antenna on the rear deck. There's a post by KrisL that shows some pics somewhere.

You can look in the bundle of wires back there and see if u have one for satellite. I believe it's got a green plastic connector on it. The phone one is blue? Maybe someone with the phone can confirm that.

The integration with the stock radio/nav is nice. I just did about 9 hours of driving this weekend and loved every minute of it with Sirius. Out in the open I had no drop-outs at all.

Jeff,

How'd you install the antenna?

I cut the tail off of the antenna (I used the BMW antenna) and have it snuggly against the back side of the anchor. The pressure from the anchor bolted back in place holds it in back and I put a small piece of velco on the front to keep it from moving.

I think KrisL left the tail on.

KrisL,

Your posts from earlier were invaluable to me today. Especially when I got to the part where the plug from the antenna wouldn't go through the threaded hole. I thought I knew how I was going to get the antenna to the receiver but it didn't work as I thought. But, your posts help me figure out what to do. I pushed the plug through the hole in the shelf but then routed it beside the thread for the anchor which allowed me to keep the anchor functional.

Here's how it turned out. You'll have to forgive the crummy quality of my cellphone pics.

I had the sirius installed for 650 and when I found the antenna was on my trunk I was pissd. I was told it would be in my sharkfin antenna, but come to find out the only way to get sirius intergrated in your sharkfin antenna is to preorder it from BMW when the car is being built, then they can have it mounted in the sharkfin antenna.

I was just informed that my 05 330i is not pre-wired for Sirius. therefore the wiring must be run from the trunk to the headunit. Per Circle BMW, this is a 3 hour job at a cost of over $600.

Can this be right?

All E46s post-2003 are plug-and-play.

If your car is pre-wired for the cd changer, it's pre-wired for sirius. They use the same wires.

These freaking dealers are so full of crap. They are also swearing that the headunit will need to be re-programmed.

What they are telling you is true of the E90.. but not the E46.
