Loaner Car

Can anyone tell me when/during what instances a BMW dealership will give you a loaner car when you take yours in for service? My dealership has over 80 loaners (mostly 3 series), but they have never offered me one...just a ride home. What do I have to do to qualify for a loaner?
Thanks for your help!

ALL U HAVE TO DO IS COMPLAIN TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND SAY U WILL GIVE THEM A BAD CSI SCORE-AT THAT POINT I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF THE SERVICE MANAGER DROVE U HOME HIMSELF..THAT CSI SCORE GOES TO HQ FOR BMW.

Why not just ask for one when you schedule the service?

I just asked for one when I schedule a maintenance appointment. They gave me an X3 with 3000 miles on it. I hadn't even bought the car from them, but I plan to have all my work done there and to also give them first shot a selling me my next car.

Can I ask which dealer? I'm in SoCal also and I'd love to know; I might give them a try.

I am not sure if this is the case in all dealerships, but in my local one their posted rule is if the job is going to take longer than 8 hours they will give you a loaner. They also have posted that loaners are for "customers who bought their BMW/Mini from this dealership".

Now, there are always exceptions to the rule... A pregnant woman, father with 3 kids in the X5 who is obviosly stressed max, friend of the SA, friend of the friend of the SA... you get the point. Just ask, even if you didn't buy your car there, and they may very well give you a loaner anyway.

BTW- this is how I got to drive the Mini Cooper S convertible for the first time

The issue that I wonder about is what determines who gets a BMW loaner, and who gets a crappy rental car. At my dealer (Nick Alexander), everytime I've been in for service they offer me a free rental (last time it was a POS Chevy Aveo ) ... but I know they have BMW loaners. And I bought my car from them!

Thats a tough one, especially if you bought your car there. I would just start requesting a bmw loaner specifically and see what they will do for you. At my dealer they have a very large fleet of mini coopers, 3 series, and a few honda civics. I think, unless you know the owner, you get whatever they have at the time. I just got lucky last time.

I always get a loaner if the service takes more than 2 hours to complete.

I did not buy the car through the dealsship ( The dealship I bought is just about 30 minutes away).

I got a brand new 535i with less than 200 miles on it, even though I drive a 3 series. Pretty good.

Individual dealers set their own loaner policy. Best to ask in advance if you want a loaner as there are no rules or requirements set by BMW NA.

Like the free doughnuts in the waiting room, loaners are a dealer courtesy.

I think you should ask for one when you call for service. My latest BMW loaner was an '09 Alpine White 328i xDrive coupe with 2,500 miles on it (they still have it at the dealer, hopefully I'll get it tomorrow when I take my 525xi in due to an alternator malfunction. It had premium package, sports package, automatic tranny, sunroof, brown dakota leather with comfort access, hd radio, a premium stereo, and more. My first-ever BMW loaner was an '08 328xi Sedan in Jet Black with a black leatherette interior. It had 3,500 miles and only had a sunroof and comfort access. I'm curious to see what I get tomorrow.

How much was the loaner car? Did you also have a maintenance plan?

Still a valid question that is worth responding to. Loaners are USUALLY available by appointment when you schedule your service/repair visit. Ask when you will be able to get a loaner so you can make your appointment then. Obviously this doesn't work if you have a catastrophic failure -- but then another "rule" applies, if the SA/SM thinks you really should have a loaner you will get one!
