2002 325xi advice

I have a 2002 325 xi with just about 60K miles on it. Since day 1 the car has had a very tricky throttle/clutch response. It seems that every now and then when you start out the engine RPM's just drop to nothing, when I push in the clutch to prevent a stall the RPM's shoot up to over 2000 and then settle back down. If I try to go anyway and feather the gas/clutch, the car bucks like a first time standard driver. Backing up is a similar problem, it's difficult to back this car up slowly. It's almost guaranteed to stall unless you get the engine RPM's up to about 1500 before you go.

The dealer upgraded the programming last time I was in, thinking that would solve it but it still behaves the same.

Anyone have similar symptoms and what did you do to solve it.

TIA,

I have an '04 325XI and sometimes, rarely, when I have a cold start, the RPM's drop pretty low. I don't get the spike in RPM's though. The engine is so quiet to that I sometimes get pretty close to stalling, if I'm not careful... especially when I'm in reverse.
