2002 bmw 325i heat problems

When I start my car in the morning to warm up(-40 temp), the engine itself warms up according to the engine temp gauge, but it doesn't blow warm air until I start to drive it. Also, when I stop at a stop sign or whatever, it stops blowing hot air. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check your coolant level first.

I checked at cold temp and it was low but it wasn't below the min line. That wouldn't effect it would it?

So on your instrument cluster, your temp says -40? If so, your ambient temp sensor might be damaged, and or like many cases, missing. This is located on the front wheel well, either on the driver's or passenger's side. Depends wether or not your bmw came equiped with a windshield washer fluid temp sensor. Look around the area, if you see two loose green wires, bam, your temp sensor is gone.

You probably have an air pocket trapped in your system. It needs to be properly bled out. See the cooling section of the e46 wiki. Might need to raise the front end of the car a bit while bleeding.

@robgar. Thanks for the tip. My sensor has been missing for a while but I never noticed the actually temp inside the cab to change. I will also try to raise the front end and bleed. I bled it while ago after adding coolant but I did not try raising the front
