I wish I could tell you....I've had the same problem for nearly 8 months. My EML light will go on when I am coasting in gear. I pulled the codes and it said that my idle air control valve was stuck open.

Yesterday, I pulled the idle air control valve out (after about an hour of wrestling) and sure enough, the valve was stuck. It was covered in dirt and grease. I cleaned it up and it moved freely. I put the valve back in and I'm still having trouble!!!!

I'm at a complete loss now....sorry I can't be more of a help

I don't know about "valvetronic" but it is possible that if you have an 2000/2001 E46 that it's a short in either the engine wiring harness and/or the throttle body. I am having the same problem on and off for over a year and have done a lot of research. There is a service bulletin that calls for replacing the harness ($250.00 from Tischer) due to faulty crimping at the factory. There is also a bulletin for replacing the throttle body for the same reason (faulty internal crimping on the motor). On my 2001, I get the EML and Traction Control lights about every 3 months or so. The car idles rough and the throttle acts strange (hard to describe). Usually a "reboot" clears the light and the car runs normally for a few months after that. The last time this happened the SES light also came on and later cleared by itself. I have ordered "Carsoft" to help investigate the codes. The generic code that was returned was a P0175 "system too rich". I suppose it could be a problem with the MAF or maybe a short in the harness. I'm intersted to see if Carsoft can pull anything other than the P0175. I'll let you know if I find anything. Our local dealer charges $65.00 for the "diagnosis" so that's my next step if Carsoft can't help. I'll update if I find anything out. Please let us know if you find your problem.
