I've created a monster

My wife has never been a bimmer person (mainly because she never owned one) but now after a month in my 40 she's decided that she is hooked and wants one for her. So at the moment we are toying up either buying a 2nd 40 a 30 or an X5 4.4. Great for me as I don't have to sell the idea any more. Now just knowing what to do. Any ideas

Must not get a better one for her!! You get the 40 and she gets a 30

Good luck and happy hunting my friend.

My wife also developed a fondness for bimmers she caught from me. We bought her a 330 as she didnt like driving my 5 (she's tiny). The X5 idea came about a month before the baby.

She likes the X well enough, but wont give up the 3. I use it as my daily beater and weekend family hauler. We bought the 3.0 X5 and I'm happy with it 95% of the time. The other 5% I just remind myself whats coming with the 5.

Is the 3 really that under powered. I mean I know it's not going to out pull my 40 but is ther that much weight behind the X causing that much performance degradation

It depends on whom you ask. Just like the 540's vs 530's those on either side of the debate will argue one subjective point over another until everyone is blue in the face.

Recently, I considered trading up to a V8 X5. Keep in mind that the new V8's are the valvetronics (315HP), so they're an even greater difference between the 225 HP 3.0's than the previous 282 4.4's like in our 540's. I drove a few of them. The difference is THERE, no doubt. But in the end, it just wasnt worth the premium to me.

The exhaust note is different and the V8 feels like it wants to do more than just cruise around. Both cars are great Interstate cruisers. In fact on a recent 6 hour road trip, I was impressed at the 3.0's willingness to stay at 80-90 pretty much the whole time. Not as ready to do so on the hills as a V8. What the hell though. This was the first road trip in two years.

Where do I miss the power? Interstate merging. I do it every day, and it'd be nice to hit it and be there when I need it. 95% of the time, I don't need it as the merge happens without drama.

The one aggravating thing is that the new V8 is about as efficient as the old 3.0. That's proabably what pushes me to the V8 more than anything. Still not worth the premium to me.

Why would a buy the V8? If I find the deal. And I mean THE deal that makes me simply just HAVE to get into it. As I've told a friend of mine- I'll do it for $6K. (which is incidentallly about how much an SC would run ) I wont for $10K.
