Mein Auto: 98 m3 dinan
is a hard top for a 98 m3 worth it

I am thinking of getting a hard top for my 98 m3 convertible. I want to know the advantages. How much quieter does it make it? Does it add stability? Does it get rid of the rattly noise of the convertible when the top is up. I here you can't track your car unless you get a hard top, is that true. Are they easy to put on. My dealer sells them for $2700., is that a good price or is there another place to buy it. I love my car, the previous owner Dinaned it out and it runs great but upgrades are always nice.

I had a vert but never had a hardtop. I would look for a used on ~1200 + you may have to paint it. You would never get your money out of that new one.

I had a hard top for my 99 M3. I only used it during the winter since it was my daily driver. It takes 2 people to install and remove it and both are fairly easy. You lock two posts into little wells on the the side of the car in front of where the top unfolds and then there is a 3rd lock up front above the rear view mirror. It definitely cut down on noise but I didn't notice a real difference in terms of rigidity. With the combination of snow tires and the hard top I did feel a dip in performance but I'm not sure how much of that had to do with the extra weight from the top vs. the tires.

I think it would all depend on how much you'd plan on tracking the car or if you live where the winter is particularly bad. I was living in an apartment with no garage at the time so the hard top saved me from having to scrape ice off of the cloth in the morning. For me it was well worth it but I couldn't wait till the spring to be able to take it off. Hope this helps.

I have the hard top for my 99 M3 and although I don't believe that it increases body rigididy, noise is definitely cut down and with all of the rain in the pacific northwest it is a nice winter option especially considering that it has an electric rear window defroster.

I love my hardtop on my 98 Alpine M3 Vert! Not only is it quiet, it gives the M3 a totally different look than the coupe because of the radical back window. I love it...looks mean!
