How is CarMax?

Was wondering if anyone had experience with Carmax? How was it? would you buy and M3 from such a place?

Really? They appeared to be priced quite a bit below Blue Book. Look much lower than dealer prices.

I would like a CPO car, but am trying to get a good car at a good price. Im trying to find a happy medium between reliable car and cost.

They will ship cars between CARMAX dealerships for small fees as well--you may want to extend your search farther out than just your state--I would advise you to get one in warranty [less than 50K miles] so that if there are any niggling problems they can be corrected on BMWNA's dime. My family bought my sister's car at CARMAX and had no issues at all--they seem like a no-hassle place to get a car. That said, I would buy a car in warranty, especially one as expensive to maintain as a high end Bimmer.

By the way--nice Screen name

I appreciate feedback, but i wish people would elaborate a little and explain their thinking. Just saying something sucks doesnt help me much.

Bought a BMW from CarMax, turned out it had an interior water leak, took us months to get fixed by the dealer (fortunately under warranty) and they ended up ripping out the entire interior 3 or 4 times... so by the time we got it back, it was full of squeaks... Sold it back to CarMax (after it was fixed) and they didn't even blink an eye, even though it had a repair history a mile long, and the BMW dealer was across the street... also sold them another car that had two bent rims, not a peep out of them...

Long story short, I like their process (no haggle, no hassle, etc.) but I do not trust the quality of their cars... and I definitely wouldn't buy an M3 from them... too much chance someone ragged it out and put it away wet, and then sold it to CarMax... For an M3, I'd ONLY buy a used CPO with low-mileage... and purchase the extended maintenance and warranty if you kept it longer than 50K miles... There are some really low mileage CPO M3s around... sure, you'll pay more than CarMax, but at least you'll have an almost new car!

For example:

At those prices you might as well buy new. You can get the same cars at least 10K cheaper privately.

Private Party is always the best way to buy. Carmax will pay about what a dealer will give you in trade-in. About five years ago I sold a car privately and had gone to Carmax to figure out the "floor" price (worst I could do). I sold it much higher knowing I could "lean" on Carmax.

You should be able to get any 03 coupe or convertible for 42k.

True, but privately does not provide a 6 year / 100K warranty (which at least in my case, has been a good thing to have ... Carmax offers a warranty, but you have to pay extra AND get the service done at Carmax...) Althought technically "used", these vehicles are almost new, being such low mileage... I'm sure if I had posted some "CarMax mileage" vehicles (say 20k miles or so) they would have been more in line with the prices you are expecting...

yeah, but $10K can buy you a whole lot of repairs/service. If the car holds up you will be out a whole lot less. Add to that the financing cost if you use financing and it's even better.
oh, and don't forget the taxes ! So the difference is more than $10K.

I wouldnt buy a car from CARMAX, not only because it expensive, but their marketing strategy of screening only quality car to sell is a hype!

Im sure one or two falls through the cracks, for the extra money spend in their cars, I can do my homework much better in selecting a car (CARFAX, PPI, test-drive. Forums etc), thus used saved money for service and upgrades.
Only after doing so, I would know that I have a quality car!

a guy who used to work for me bought two bmw's from carmax including an e46 m3. he's never had problems buying from them. however, if it were me, i would look for a 3 year old cpo car. with cpo, you'll get the extended bmw warranty. this should be well within your price range.
