Runflat Survey

For an article I am writing, I am surveying whether you like the tires your car came with. Please only post comments related to the questions below.

If you have 17" sport tires, please vote with the 18" group. IF YOU DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE AN E90 OR E9X, PLEASE DO NOT VOTE! Since this is an E90 board and it's a runflat survey, I thought this would be obvious, but as Whiskey.org pointed out...

Your help is appreciated and the findings will be published (presuming we get enough people taking the survey to make it valid).

I voted "I have the standard 16" or 17" AS tires, don't like how they ride (post why) but I'm keeping them", but I have an E46, so if you are researching E90s and want to throw out the vote go ahead. My E46 is a 330xi with the sport package.

I will keep them for now, but may decide to go to normal tires when these are worn out. The biggest problems I see are tramlining and a very greasy feeling when trying to brake abruptly in damp or wet weather. They also have a greasy feeling when cornering "above the norm". The tires only have about 8,000 miles on them (the car has about 12K, but apx 1/3 of the time snow tires are on.)

I use a standard set of sport snow tires of the same size as the runflats mounted on separate (but exactly the same model) rims, and the problems go away.

I can't vote since there's no choice for folks like me, I.E., I'm simply ambivalent about it since I'm unwilling to spend upwards of a grand to find out if the NRF's will shave any time off my autocross laps, or ride better and more quietly.

I have the 17 inch sportpack tires, (so I voted in the 18 inch section since there wasn't a 17 inch option)

Pirelli euphoria's (18" get bridgestones mainly)

I do not like them, they are not sporty enough for a performance tire. These tires do not have enough grip and they squeal like crazy when you get near the performance limit.
the steering response is also a bit vague.

I use the car for commuting mostly, so I'm not going to throw out the tires before they're worn out but I certainly won't replace them with the OEM replacement runflats when these are worn out.

Looks like you may have a tough time here Jspira, looks like people who don't have runflats aren't smart enough not to vote here..................

You must have skipped stastics in college...

The survey would need at least 9 choices to be complete. You might want to assume that people who bought sport or nonsport had expectations therein and narrow your survey down to just 3 choices.

I don't get it - this is an E90 board and the E46s don't even come with runflats. Why did you vote in the first place? The system doesn't allow for adjustments like throwing a vote out.

Understood but perhaps find the closest choice to describe your like or dislike of what you have. THanks!

I just can't justify the expense of 4 new tires AND a spare, at this point. I'll wait till they wear out and then think of something else.

My question to people who have replaced them, what did you do for a spare? I don't think a dougnut tire would work for an AWD(I have an xi). I always thought they had to have same size tires at all times. Plus where do you store it in the car?

You want to help refine this? By all means... I didn't skip statistics btw. I tried to make it simple so it wouldn't be overwhelming. Statistics show that people get confused by too many responses.

I like road feel and handling given by my 17" runflat sports tires, but they do run a bit more rough than my E46's 17" Yokos. They are also more quiet. Thank Heavens!

1) next time say E90 only then. I'm sorry that I was reading -your- board.
2) E46's came with run flats with the sport pkg starting 2004. Do you need a picture as proof?
3) The system doesnt, but you can take the results at the end and subtract 1 from the "I have the standard 16" or 17" AS tires, don't like how they ride (post why) but I'm keeping them". Not that hard.

I voted,i like the run flats.I like that they seem to have a little harder ride. The ride seems more sporty to me.I will replace with run flats, but i will not use the same brand of tires. The oem tires, seem to have little tread life, just all around low quaility.

Speaking of "not that hard", it's not that hard to realize that - on the E90 board - this is an E90 specific survey. No one else had such great difficulty grasping this as you.

At least you apologized.

I don't have an E90 either, so I guess I'm stupid too.

Or perhaps I came into this thread via the "new posts" button whereas one's eye is usually focused on the left column, not way over to the right where the E90 subject is indicated.

We all would have benefitted from you laying it out in the subject line or start of the subject body.

Perhaps but I just looked and it's not ALL way to the right. The forum you are in is pretty clear at all times. You just have to read your screen.

Actually, it seems that the BMW community benefits quite abit from Jspira's many contributions, both online as posts and in the many articles he writes to inform and educate us. His cover story in this month's ROundel is helping me tremendously as i plan my ED.

Do I mind the runflats ... no. Do I think non-runflats handle better, yes. None of your choices fit.

For a better survey:

If you had the choice or runflats or non-run flats which would you choose?

A little less hostility would be a nice touch, Dave, everyone errs from time to time, even Jspira.

Dear David, since there is a lot of overlap between the 3 boards, it honestly didn't occur to me. The tone of messages I've gotten back here shows the wonderful superiority and civility of the folks on the E90 board. Don't worry I won't post in E90 again.

And David a one (former)NYer to another, your stepping in the middle of this gets the attention it deserves in the NY fashion

I find run flats to be a bit rough over bumps compared to non run flats. However, with almost 10K miles on the run flats, they are obviously more quiet and they handle cornering much better.

Also, it looks as though I will get close to 30K miles out of a set compared to 15-20K miles on previous non run flat tires. (Both sport tires). This makes run flats for me much cheaper to use in the long run when you look at it from a cost per mile perspective.
