Rattle/clunk on 6-speed

I have a 2006 M3 (6-speed manual) with about 1000 miles on it. Somewhere around 300-400 miles, it started to make a rattling or clunking sound. It mainly seems to happen around 1st gear, going in or out, sometime putting the clutch in, and when I have the clutch in and the rear wheels go over a fairly sharp bump. It does not seem to happen when I have the gears engaged and am driving.

"Rattle" doesn't seem quite right, as it's more clunky, but it gives me the impression of maybe something a little bouncy. It does seem to be coming from the rear. It's louder if I have the windows down, so I suppose it's coming from something on the outside of the car.

I'll be asking about it at my 1200-mile service, but until then does this sound familiar to anybody? I'd prefer to know a little about it going in, especially in case I get a "They all sound like that" response.

Thanks.

I don't have any noises, All I have noticed is that first and second gears offer a little more resistance to go in as soon as you drive the car after sitting over night. My old 3 series did the same thing, so I think that is normal.

Take care!

Hate to say it, but apparently, they really do all do that...It's been explained to me as noise from the limited slip differential that's in the car and that some cars are louder than others, but they all do make the noise to some extent. It definitely threw me when I first got my car and noticed it. I thought the rear was about to fall out! Enjoy the new ride!

Some cars will clunk more than others in the act of shifting but not when rolling with the clutch disengaged (pedal in).

Hi. I have 4500 miles on my '06 M3. Every straight 6 M car I've ever driven has, to some degree, had 'the clunk', including mine. It's not very loud and it's not all the time. It's normal. I would mention it to your SA at the 1200 mile service, never hurts to have a look while it's on the rack anyway.

Normal from what I have experienced. Drove an 04 6 speed once in a while and it had the same issue. They are clunky. This car isn't for comfort or quiet rides, although I must say they are not bad at all.

I just purchased a 06 M3 6 speed with 10 miles on it and it did that on the test drive. I was like WTF? i asked to drive another M3 w/ manula and it did the same thing. I see from this string that it not a big deal.

Ok, well I got it back from the 1200-mile; they said it's normal drivetrain noise. So I guess that's that. Thanks for all the feedback.
