Question Is the extended service warranty (4 yr/45K) worth getting?

I have 22500 right now... coming up to Inspection 1 pretty soon. Wondering if I should extend my service warranty? What do you think?

how much are they charging for it? i will probably be out of my warranty period in about another year. (i put on 25K miles my first year owning the car).

from what i understand, the extended warranty is usually priced at a point where they have a reasonable expectation to not lose money. so essentially, on the average, you are probably paying about the same amount for the warranty as you would in repairs/service over that period.

I bought the extended service plan since i put about 25,000 miles a year on my car. I had an A4 Avant that was covered by Audi for 4yr/50k full service so I think that also influenced my decision somewhat. But the price of the 4yr/45K BMW plan was about $700 through the dealer. The justification I made also was when they told me that a 40k service was $600.

Inspection II at 40,000K miles? What do you drive?

All E46es inspection II comes at 60,000 miles. I personally would NOT buy extended service plan because on my E46es it would pay for exactly 1 extra oil change...worth about $40. It's pure profit for the dealership.

Hack,
I've got a 325Ci and you're right about the 60k Inspoection II.
The extended maintenance plan also covers the following wear and tear items at any time up to 50k:

Brake Linings (pads & rotors)
Clutch
Drive Belts
Any Adjustments Do to Normal Operating Conditions

Since I put so many miles on my car (I'll hit 36k in 18 months) I felt that the extra money was worth it. I think it all depends on how much driving the car is going to feel. Mine is a big mix of hard stop and go and highway.

Da Hack is correct, the extended warranties through the dealers are a rip-off. If you feel you may have a "lemon" car, or one that will require a lot of servicing, it might save you money in the long run to buy an extended warranty, but do not buy one through a dealer unless you like to throw money away. If you shop around, you can get extended warranties for half of what the dealer charges. Credit Unions are a great source for these.

I personally wouldn't gamble with an extended warranty. Take the money you are planning to spend on the warranty and invest it. Use the earnings on repairs (if any are necessary).

the extended warranty was through BMWNA. Transferable even if one decides to sell.

Personal opionion: extended warranties of any kind are rarely worth it. The issuing party will always enough for the contract so that they know with great certainty that they will make money off the deal.

The BMW warranty is about $700.00 If you invest the money, it should pay for the inspection and minor service during the extra year. Why bother?
