My guess, and it's only that, is that your idle control valve is either clogged with crap or defective.

Idle control valve /and or the idle control module that goes with it gets my vote as well. if you don't have a manual, go to EBAY to view one. changing it is sas simple if not easier than pulling a spark plug. The idel control mod is a differnt animal though.
On an 86 325ES, that module/box is located under/around the glove box area. It's green and has a number of wires that are color coded and plug into it. They fall out easily, and you've got to pay attention. But try to just change the valve first. You can get a used one on EBAY for around 20.00 dollars. Or, go top the boneyard and pull one for about ten. I feel boneyard parts are ok for the most part, if the car looks like it was taken care of and it was wrecked. I got mine from the junkyard for 10.00 and my car displayed the eact symptoms yours does. I put it in, it cleared up. Of course, a week later the fuel pump went, but that's another story.

Good Luck

I'm not sure but, is it possible if there is a problem with the idle control valve that your RPM would lag/twitch rather than work smoothly?
thanks.

Well, I can't speak for every car, but in my 86 325 ES it did do that. I would stop at a light and it would just rev, up and down. It cleared up after I changed it. Maybe I was just lucky, but it's worth a try at under 20 bucks for a used one.

i tried everything and nothing worked. If u have tried everything and it still revs like my 325e everytime i came to a stop then get ur computers checked. Because it happened to be that mine was finished. I had it repaired and it never did it again. I would suggest talking to ur mechanic some time soon as reving at hi revs on a cold engine may damage it. I think that damaged mine a bit. No need to warry as im getting a rebuild with 325i head and cams. It could be something else. Try cleaning ur throttle and all that crap with carby cleaner. Clean the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) bye letting it soak in metholated spiritrs then letting it dry. If all these and some of the suggestions the guys gave ya check that computer HAPPY EASTER EVERYBODY
