Which Bluetooth phone with Sprint to choose?

Ok I know there have been several threads about bluetooth. I have a 2006 330i and I want to get a bluetooth phone. I have sprint and the 2 phones that BMW says are compatible, (http://www.bmwtransact.com/bluetooth/Compatible_Phones.htm) well one, Sony doesn't make anymore and the Treo is too much phone for what I need. So what can I do? Just get a phone and deal with the problems that others have or, do I get the phone that I want and see if BMW can make all the features work. Any thoughts?

First of all, it's not like Sprint sells a lot of BT phones to begin with. Do you have iDrive? If yes, does it matter if you can transfer your phone book to the car and use voice recognition to dial those numbers? If you don't care about the phone book part, then any phone with BT will probably send and receive calls.

I happen to love my 650.

Yes I have iDrive, so you're saying that probably the only feature that I'd loose is the phone book and voice activation? The voice activation doesn't work all that well in the first place. When you say "650" is that a sony phone?

Sony hasn't made phones in several years. The 650 is by Palm.

You would also lose voice recognition - which is a great feature.

The best thing to do is to consider a mobile operator that has a better selection of mobiles with Bluetooth. The most compatible are the Sony Ericsson mobiles by the way - and they can be used with any GSM mobile operator!

Here is my recommendation: buy a SE T608 on eBay (just check with Sprint to make sure they will still activate this model). You can find a like new T608 probably for $80 or $90. There's only one for sale right now ($150).

Palm Treo 650.

If you want an new phone just to send and receive calls, the LG 325 should work and many have reported it does, but no phonebook functionality.

Still, with a car like yours, I would very much consider the 650. This phone can also play movies and MP3s and do lots of other tricks.

mflemon, did you end up getting the Sony Ericsson T608? How is it working with your E90 as to the specifics below?

[ ] phone pairs to car regularly and quickly
[ ] phone book automatically synchs to car and contacts are displayed on iDrive control display
[ ] for multiple phone number entries in phone book, identifies type (home, cell, work)
[ ] can make calls from phone book using iDrive control display
[ ] can dial by voice from phone book without verbal training of system
[ ] when receiving call, can see incoming caller's ID on iDrive control display
[ ] can take incoming calls using steering wheel button
[ ] iDrive control display shows last 8 calls (missed, outgoing, incoming)
[ ] can use call waiting (see 2nd caller's ID, switch to 2nd call, switch back, using car's controls and not phone's controls, without losing either caller)
[ ] can retrieve landline voicemail messages, using programmed pauses, passwords, etc.

Anyone else have (or had) this phone and care to weigh in on the details above?

Thanks for your help!

I would be very careful if you are thinking of getting the SET608 right now.

The SET608 has been discontinued for some time now. BMW does not support discontinued phones and as a result, either now or with a future sw upgrade to your car, you could find that the 608 will no longer work.

Thanks for the warning. I hadn't thought of a software upgrade potentially disabling it. On the other hand, switching carriers (from Sprint to a GSM carrier) would be a monumental hassle and expense right now, so I am looking for a short-term, interim solution that would let me keep SPrint. The only one that appeals to me is the T608. Since I'll be getting it used on eBay, it won't be a huge investment if it does become unworkable.

Thanks again.

Understood - and avoid upgrading the car's sw unless absolutely necessary. I'm not saying that the next upgrade will kill the compatibility, but at some point...

People are starting to sell their Treo 650s because of the 700p, and these work great. I would expect this device to be supported for a long time.

BTW, I've just discovered that Vision will stream internet radio up 64kbs! A very cool alternative to satellite radio. Of course in the bimmer, no integration with the audio system so you would be stuck using the PDA's UI, but a cool alternative nonetheless. Pocket Tunes would be the app of choice for this.

I will definitely avoid upgrading the software for the foreseeable future. My car works perfectly, beyond my wildest dreams, in every respect. And, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Then you are one of the few that hasn't received a recall letter. The worst part about the recall letter for CA residents is that they canot refuse the upgrade or they will not be able to pass inspection. Sometimes these upgrades will not be avoidable.

What recall letter? Not only didn't I get one, but I haven't even heard about it until now. Maybe it relates to certain production months or something (mine was built in January 2006). Can you post an image of the letter? Now I'm curious.

None of those are Sprint compatible phones, to my knowledge, and that's what this threads about.

None of the above

Seriously, choosinga mobile is a very personal thing. First check compatibility on the BMW Bluetooth microsite. Second, try each in the store and see which you like. Don't let looks deceive you - as sleek as some of the Motos look, the design (esp. the keyboard) leaves a lot to be desired. Try dialing a few long numbers on the keyboard and you tell me.

There are two active ones I'm aware of, but the one that is the most significant is the one for an emissions issue that forces all cars in the first 6 months of production to come back to the ranch for a reprogramming exercise. You can refuse this of course, but some states like Kalifonia require the change.

Since I live in FL, I have the option to refuse the change, but if I want to buy a new feature like the MOST iPod adapter, I HAVE to succumb to the software update, and I will. The software change is only a concern because of all the horror stories I've heard about the effort being fubared by so many techs. Nonetheless, I will have this done in August.

As you haven't received any letters, you are in good shape there but that doesn't mean some other discovery will come down the road and force the upgrade.

JSPIRA, might be a good future article for Roundel. And that is the changing of a gas-combustion engine driven wagon and morphing into a rolling computer. In my case, it appears that the only reason I need to bring the car back to the dealer is for software updates and not because something mechanical broke... Now if they could only figure out how do this software using BMW Assist whle I'm sleeping...

I agree - but it has been changing for quite a while. If only there were more hours in a day.

I guess the question here is, does the E90 represent a significant step in this evolution. In other words, did the E46 have auch a strong dependency on programming as the E90? IMO, this is a major paradigm shift.

One has to look at the new 7er to see the shift. And "paradigm" shift is a bit too strong for my liking (read Thomas Kuhn's work, the Structure of Scientific Revolution).

Whle the average person won't see the difference, that is, taking the car in for service be it for a defective alternator or for a software upgrade, this to me is a major change in the way the car is dealt with. It's like any other computer device I have, be it iPod, Treo, Laptop, PC, only that the car also provides transportation. You may not see it this way, but I do. Automobile ownership now has to deal with the concept of software currency whereas before the programming of the car was set and NEVER altered to the best of my knowledge.

I think I was agreeing with you, I just said it's not a paradigm shift. That's why I recommended Kuhn. A paradigm shift is more of the earth is flat earth is round variety.

I believe that the first car to use a microprocessor was the 1978 Cadillac Seville. The chip, I believe a modified 6802, ran the car's trip computer, a dashboard display of mileage and other info. Today that kind of microprocessor muscle could barely adjust your mirrors.

On 6/29, Sprint announce 4 new phones I believe, at least 3 of which I know to have BT. What I don't know is if they work with our cars. Look for the A640, Katana and the Fusic. The Katana is a Razor clone and made by Sanyo which is a big plus for Sprint users.
