530i - Excellent Highway Mileage

Folks

I got my 2007 530i about 3 weeks ago and took it on a trip this past weekend for a total of about 850 miles round trip (DC to East Tennessee). The drive was mostly on I66 and I81 at speeds between 70-80 mph. As many of you know, I81 is quite hilly most of the way. I got around 33 mpg on the trip, which is better than the 29 mpg EPA estimate on the window sticker and I think quite good for a car of this size and power. I don't recall ever having owned a car that got better mileage than the EPA estimates. Have others gotten mileage this good on the highway for a car with less than 500 miles on the odometer at the start of the trip? BTW, I confirmed the accuracy of the trip computer calculations by doing the mpg the old way; the trip computer was within 0.1 of my calculations on both fill ups. I found that to be pretty impressive as well.

Overall I love this car. The power and performance are outstanding and I very much enjoy the extra room compared to my old Audi A4. A few quibbles (that I actually passed along to BMW NA today when they called to see how things were going):

1. Need more interior storage space and better cup holders
2. Add a few direct input buttons on dash to simplify simple things like changing bands of radio, etc. I-drive is OK, but requires to many clicks for some simple tasks.
3. Need to improve navigation system, current version is way behind Acura systems.

I look forward to seeing what BMW does with the 2009 models as my 24 month lease will be up and I hope to do ED for the next car.

John

Try voice commands for many simple tasks. Saves many iDrive steps.

525i MPG

I have taken my 2007 on two trips to the DC area since receiving it in early April. When I am on the open highway, which in Northern Virginia is a relative term, I'm getting about 29.5 mpg. When I look at the vacuum gage, the car seems to operate most efficiently around 74 mph and less so at slower cruise speeds. On my first tank of gas which had mixed open road and city driving, I got over 27 mpg with which I was satisfied. My hope is that mpg will improve even more as the engine is broken in (now at 1000 miles). With gas now at $3.09, I'm anxious for a reduction in price as the reimbursement rate remains at $.45 per mile.

Like you, I am really enjoying the car. Perhaps my favorite feature is the phone cradle and bluetooth interface. I also love the precise steering of the car and the sexy dashboard at night. I'm just wondering if I'll ever learn how to use all of the features on the car!

You might want to do an actual calculation by hand to check your values. The numbers from the navigation is usually a little optimistic.

Thanks for the advice regarding voice commands. I'm starting now to try to learn more about the commands that are available and quickly seeing that there are multiple ways to navigate in most areas.

On the issue of the trip computer accuracy, I did check the mileage the old fashioned way (miles driven divided by gallons to fill the tank) and the results were within 0.1 mpg, so it seems the read out is pretty accurate.

In response to your EPA query, my car is rated, I think, in the high 20's for highway mileage. Now granted, my car is an older 3, but I routinely get 32 mpg on my trips home to Atlanta. That is averaging around 70 MPH, including stops, and all those calculations are by hand. I achieved a one time high back in October of 35 mpg on a tank while travelling up I-95 from Atlanta to Richmond.

I also had a 2003 Sentra Spec-V back in, well, 2003 and when I visited my sister here in Rchmond, that car always did way better than its EPA estimate. It was rated at 29 highway mileage and i remember one trip getting 35 MPG. To top it off, that was with 4 adults and luggage.

After the Spec-V, I had a 2003 WRX that was rated at 27 highway and it never got more than 26 or 27 at anytime. I tried to break 30 but it was not to be!

I think the EPA numbers are very hit or miss.

I can check the sticker from my '00 540i6, but I always got significantly better than it's rating. Running 80-90 mph hwy would return around 30 mpg measuring the "old fashion" way. Computer was about 3 mph more optimistic on my particular car.

My '03 ML500 is WORSE than the sticker of 14/17.
I usually get about 12 in town and 15 hwy (UGH)

Just remember that the OBC is not always calibrated correctly. You need to check it with fullups at the gas station.

I suspect that your truer highway mileage will be somewhere between 26-30mpg.

on a 2700 mile trip i did the math and found the 25.4 was 25 which is not to bad. it was a cross country trip in a 545 at speeds to 85 and a overall average of 73mph. i found that at speed over 73 the milage does drop drasticly.
