I'd love to have this car but the What it gets: About 18 mpg in 400-horsepower mode, 10 mpg when kicked up to 500 hp Is not so appealing lol.

I drove one at the 6 Series Driving school. I could feel 500 horses unless I got above 100MPH.
Most people will not notice a difference over a 550 unless they are going very very fast. The M5/6 do their best over 5000RPM and speeds in excess of 100MPH. The fuel consumption is a killer too.

If you don't notice the difference, then well... I notice a huge difference between the current 550 and a 2002 M5, so I imagine the differences from the current model are even more pronounced. BMWs are not run of the mill cars and M5s are not run of the mill BMWs. |

Depends.
M5's lack of low end torque makes it sluggish off the line. I wouldn't be suprised that 550i has better response off the line. Once rolling M5 is a beast because the pull never ends way past triple digit. This is where 550i and M5 differs. As far as consumption goes. I give credit to CNN. Even when i took the beast down to Santa Barbara from bay area. Driving as gently as possible in 400HP. I averaged just 17.7 mpg (going between 70 to 75 and always in 7th gear- i will admit that i did race a E39 on the way down for about half mile). Daily driving in 400HP mode is about 12 to 13 mpg. 500HP mode, I am lucky if i can get it close to 9mpg.
