1992 BMW factory Midrange size

Sorry, i know this has been brought up but i seriously couldn't find an exact answer. What size is (or at least will fit) the factory midrange (speaker under the tweeter) in a 1992 BMW 325i? It looks like its anywhere from 2'' to maybe 3.5'' I'm not sure; if anyone has replaced theirs, what brand/size did u use? thanks for the help!

I just bypassed mine. There isn't a heck of a lot of information coming form them.

IIRC, it's about a non-standard size like 3.5", but the factory cross-overs are in the amp itself. This means that unless you change the amp, and add your our crossovers, the replacement (non-BMW) speaker won't sound better (probably worse) because it doesn't match the factory speaker impedence/performance.
So...either change everything, or replace it with factory. Sux, I know.

That's a bleak prophecy lol. I eventually plan on changing everything, but not right off. I'm still open to ideas on what to do, but i guess I'll just put in my 5.25'' component system i have for the front speakers, and throw 6x9's in the back with an adapter I got from bavariansoundwerks.com. Man, I'm gonna miss having midrange - I know they're not the greatest but I think they do add some detail to the music.

The cutout hole in the door panel is exactly 3-1/16". You also have to know that the door panel in that area is slightly curved, and so is the stock speaker grille to match it; you can barely notice it. Which goes to say that you may end up with a slight gap between the panel and an aftermarket speaker, in 2 areas along the circumference.

I put in a JL Audio 3 component speaker system and a new amp. The OEM midrange is an 8 ohm so you can't use aftermarkey speakers unless you put in an aftermarket ammp too.
With a 4" JL Audio midrange speaker, I put in a fabbed 3/4" MDF spacer with radiused edges for a clean look, and so the speaker would clear the window, then sawed the spacer in half, and slipped each half under the leatherette fabric, and bolted/glued the halves with speakers altogether from the back.
You have to slightly radius the back of the MDF spacer so it fits the curve of the door.
