Manual gearbox noisy (1992 318i)... ideas?

With the clutch pedal PRESSED IN, there's no noise other than the engine and what I think is a noisy alternator ......

When I release the clutch..... it sounds like the gearbox has no oil in it. It goes from "nothing" to "KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and stays like that. I believe it gets louder after driving for a while, but its hard to judge.

It could be a thrust bearing...... or it could be the "first motion shaft" (or whatever the guy called it)..... but either way it sounds like i'm driving a 70's Toyota. This is hardly the prestigious sound people expect to hear from a nice black BM, but it's there alright.

Anybody else experienced this..... or more so, know how to fix it semi-properly at home?

I'm happy to get my hands dirty, but you can forget the idea of me dropping the gearbox out until the thing siezes up on me.

Pretty sure that my only hope is to try a thicker oil.

Definitely flush the fluid and refill. Try redline D4 or Royal Purple Synchromax. That's the first thing i would try.
