Convertible Operation and Repair

I need a good email address to send you a large PDF file that should help you repair your fully automatic top. The file is 1Meg so you need to be able to accept that file.
You also need to be able to describe what the problem is with the top. When you push the close button what happens? Does the light flash on the consul or what is going on?
Most top issues are due to out of adjustment areas or a disconnected linkage. Also check on the bimmerforum when the search function is working again as it has a good write up on an inop top.

I'd love to get a copy, chgrec@yahoo.com My wife's 98 fully auto top stops about halfway up. it wil go back down though. We had the canvas & headliner replaced about 3 months ago due to an attempted break in...I think it maybe the controller for the top but I am not sure.....

thanks
Chris

Hi guys,
I had the same problem with my convertible this weekend. I closed the roof manually (because the auto system was faulty). Now I am trying to figure out how to put it back on auto.

Please email me the PDF. bradleyd@proscan.co.za

Thanks a 'mil

Oh, please mail me the PDF also nixon@pp.inet.fi

I'm in a real need actually, something is not working and my half-automatic is working only at manual (and when the top is down I can't get the box to lock so I can't drive without the top)

My top died yesterday, i pressed the button and nothing happened, no warning lights, no noise, no movement etc.

It turned out my trunk was not closed all the way, it looked closed but it was not which disables the power top.

Hope this helps.

How about someone host the file instead of relying on email.

Unhappy

I will have to add to this as well. My top had been working intermittently. As such, it would begin to ascend then stop. Most of the time I was able to return to a closed position. Magically, it would begin to work again. Finally, it stopped again part way open and I couldn't get it closed automatically. All the while, you could hear the motors whirring when an attempt was made to open/close. Called the Dealer/Mechanic and he suggested I pull the motor release to manually close, which I did. Here's the upshot:

1. The Dealer/Mechanic attempted to reset the motors but failed, indicating that I need to replace the motor in the quarter panel. In other words, $650.

2. I attempted the resetting procedure numerous times and failed as well.

3. Now, there is no motor activity; however, there was before I pulled the "rip cord"

My questions are:

1. While my car is a 1998, is it reasonable that the convertible top motor is blown given only 40,000 miles on a car driven in Chicago? In other words, could it be a simple electrical problem, and if so, how can I test it?

2. Has anyone replaced the motor in the quarter panel for cheap and/or are there other electrical diagnostic tests that can be done before I bite the bullet at the dealer? or can someone recommend a non-bmw repair center in Chicagoland?

My email address: q11449@yahoo.com thank you.

To all. the manual he is sending WILL NOT explain how to re-engage the gear drives to the top after the "rip cord" has been pulled which is where im at. all it says is "re-engage them " but doesnt explain how to do that. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO RE-ENGAGE THEM? my top cover is unhooked from motor drive since cord was pulled and i cant seem to find out how to re engage the gears.. i spent an hour today trying to figure this out with no luck.
