330 or X5

Greetings folks, My 330i is in the shop having some work done on the sunroof, so the service dept loaned me an 06 X5 3.0. I have had it for a day now and I love it. It has pretty decent pickup and excellent handling, thus I began to wonder if I should consider the possibility of swapping my 330 for the X5. If I approach the dealer with this idea, what do you guys think the dealership may say? Is swapping the vehicles even possible? By the way, there is a $5000 difference in the invoice price between the two.

wtf, M version of the X5... MX5? Miata?

Anyway, I'd take the 3er, but that's just me. I have an X5 and a 325 right now, and I love driving the 3 every single time. The X5 is a great SUV, but it's still an SUV. It's very comfortable and works great for hauling the kids around. But often times I feel like I should have saved some cash and got a Honda CRV or something for that purpose.

In my X5 I feel good. In my 3, I feel great.

I think it's just a rumour. I agree it doesn't have a lot of sense. Maybe BMW's marketing department doesn't really understand the difference between a sport utility vehicle and a sports car But then who does buy the Cayenne Turbo S?

I would get the X5, it's the last of it's generation and will be an instant classic

The rear reminded me of the Volvo SUV. Also, it looks like the headlights came from the new VW Jetta except it has projectors.

There was a rumor (in Roundel, I think) that BMW would soon be releasing some kind of very innovative, two-door, sporty SUV.

That'd be awesome, I'd buy one of those.

I saw one of those yesterday. The guy driving punched it at the light and it was just rediculous.

Ok, it seems as if most people agree that the 3 is the better choice. I live in NY and for the most part I can live without AWD, but there are times that it may be need, as my jobs require me travel in all types of weather. I guess I am attracted to the space as well as the AWD that the X5 offers...but I still love my 3.

Maybe you could meet in the middle with a 530xi. You'd have more space, the ride is more comfortable, but you'll still have better performance than the X5. I don't know off hand, but it's probably cheaper too. Oh, and better gas mileage.

Edit: I see that the 530xi and even the 525xi is more expensive than the base X5. How does this makes sense? You can get a 4.6L V8 x5 for just a bit more than the 530xi.

He would say sure, no problem. Then, when he told you the trade in value of your new 3 Series you would cry. First year deprecition will make the difference in price much more than the $5,000 difference in invoice.

With current gas price I would go for 330i, but if you needed the room for carrying stuffs then wait for new X5 coming out soon.

This is my greatest fear, but it seems that I will be keeping the 3er because I got it back today and went for a drive in it. It just reminded me why I got the 3er. It's fast, agile and looks awesome (I have monaco blue). However, if it were an even trade, I would probably go for the space of the SUV, but I doubt that the dealer would be that generous...Thanks to all for your comments!

We have a 325xi and an X3 (both 2006, both non-sport).

The X3 handles and drives better than the X5 as far as I'm concerned but that's just my opinion. At least a couple reviewers agree with me. The 4.4 X5 is faster in a straight line, but I don't live in South Florida or Texas, so it's a wash.

The 325xi drives better than the X3. 0-60 on the X3 is like 8 seconds, and that extra body height doesn't help.

The reason I usually drive the X3 instead is because I live in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and I hate not being able to see over the minivan in front of me (and the Suburban to my left, and the Explorer behind me).

Unless you need trunk space, ground clearance, or a higher seating position, I'm not really sure I see any reason to pick an X anything over a 3 series.

Loving my Alpine White X5 4.4i, I am glad that I chose the last model year. You get less problems, and extras like chrome rings around the guages with sport package. Go for it!

didn't you guys see the X5 with the Mc laren engine, it was sick, and what a sound it had.

The big car drove insane, i can maybe provide a link to it, if i can find it again?

I don't think the new X5 will tolerate that a Porsche are going to bypassit, not this time around.

If you want the benefits of the sedan's full economy/performance with AWD and space, look no further than the 325xiT or 530xiT - BMWs wagon family. They have 99% of the sporting attributes and performance of their sedan counterparts plus the room and AWD of the SAVs. Best of both worlds without the fuel consumption and performance hit....
