E36 v 07 328i

I'm going to ask a question, that maybe there's no answer for, but maybe there will be many opinions. And maybe I'll just get flamed.
As my garage shows I currently drive a 97 328i MT. I'm looking to replace it next year. I'm assuming that my choice will be between the 328i and the 335i. For my wife's sake, it will probably be an automatic.
My question is, will I be happy with the acceleration of the 07 328i compared to my 97. I understand that the 07 328i will have 230 hp, but I also understand that the AT will have a 0-60 of around 6.7sec. Which sounds about the same as my 97 (with 195hp + the Dinan chip)
Before the news of the 335i, I was going to be perfectly satisfied with the 330i. Now I'm thinking that the 335 might be a little more than I want. But I'm not sure whether the 328i will be enough of a step up for me. So, why not just get the 330i. Not sure if my answer makes sense, but it has to do with 07 vs 06, and I'm not ready to get something right now, and I'm not that interested in getting a used car.

e90 is much more refined obviously. I would bet that it is faster than 6.7s as well, though most of us here don't stress that much over 0-60 times. You also may be able to get a 330i as it is nearing end of production, probably get a good deal on one.

I still think it would be a huge step up.

Just get an E36 M3/4 auto, still plenty of power and much cheaper than a new 3-Series, just my .02.

coming out of an E36 M3 I chose the smaller motor E90 as both of them seemed slow.....

The e90 is the first 3 series model that has appealed to me since the end of the e36. In the end it just might have to be the 335i. No question about the looks and refinement and just plain driving fun of any e90. But I was just wondering whether, if I didn't even try the 335i, that I would feel like the new 328i was faster than my car.
Then again, when I was test driving my 97, I did try the M3, and still decided to save money.

The answer is simple - go test drive a 325i now. The 328i is only going to have a touch more power, so it will be roughly the same.

Actually, that might be a good idea.

That is exactly what I did. I drove the 325xi and the A4 2.0. Supposedly the only difference between the 325 and the 328 will be about 15 horsepower, just a little extra pep, but everything should feel almost identical. I plan on getting the 328xi sedan via ED, but I am just waiting on the when the earliest availabililty will be. I looks like late September early October, but my dealer said that he would not have a concrete answer until the end of June or early July when everything becomes official.
