Daytime Running Lights? DAE?

How do most of you feel about the daytime running lights? I have to have my dealer program my car soon, and I am still undecided about having this feature activated. I also plan on installing the Angel Eyes (DAE), so I am wondering if they would complement each other. For those of you that do have the daytime lights activated, is there any way to turn them off, or do they only shut off when you put the headlights on?

Here in Canada, they are mandatory (law), and they only turn off when the headlights are on.

They are great, increase your visibility = safety.

They shut off when your lights come on.

I have my DDEs set up as my daytime runners, and they look great. I have recently installed a DDE kit on another BMW and he had the daytime runners programed to be on and they did detract from the DDEs. It totally washes out the light. You only can see the outter ring.

They are great. Really improve a car's visibility to others.

However, they really screwed up WRT fog lights.

Fogs should definitely count as DRLs and the standard DRLs should turn OFF when the fogs are ON.

DRLs on make fogs pretty much useless and end up being for appearance only.

I never understood why anyone would want to activate DRLs?

Besides those who are for it, I think the point of turning on your lights during the day is pointless. Why not just turn on your low beams instead? I think chevy cavaliers have the DRLs on as a standard and it does nothing for me. My .02

Bimmers just look better with them off during the day IMO. But those Demon Eyes are pretty nifty for show aspect during sunfall.

I couldnt agree more. The DDEs look great right before sunfall. When I dont have to have my headlights on, they glow like crazy

Funny you say that. I find myself leaving work now just at the right time. I can drive most of the way home with just the DDEs on. Gotta love it.

I did the install on my car, yes. I have since done a second on Blade929's car. Both came out great.

Loki's situation is different and with an older version of Daylight Demon Eyes and the original retailer for the kits.

Loki would probably like the new Gen IV kits, but is not interested in angel eyes at this point.

I have a set of the DAE's, and I plan to install them once I get some free time. I've been reading that it will take AT LEAST 3 hours to do the install, so I may hit you up for some suggestions re installation.

As far as the daytime running lights go, I think I am going to pass on it. I would rather have control over when my lights are on or off, and I honestly don't believe they add any safety when the sun is out. There are actually organizations out there that are trying to stop the use of DRL's...

Interesting case againts DRL's

Hey shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send ya couple of good pics that have some instructions on them. Stuff I put together. I have installed 2 kits now on 2 coupes with no problems. The insatll took me 4 hours each time.
As far as DRL are concerned, I dont have it set up that way for saftey, its for the public to view!!! Call me a show off, but something that pretty should be on all the time.

A switch is something I'm going to do. I just havent gotten around to it. I may add a 2nd small battery so I can keep them on at shows. Throw in the red lenses for the Ohh factor

I had my DRLs activated for really just one reason: I don't much care to use 'flash-to-pass' and I'm hoping the DRLs will make me more noticable to slower drivers in the left lane as I approach and they'll move over without having to resort to using flash-to-pass.

If they don't move over now (with the DRLs on), I kind of figure they're not going to move over if I flash-to-pass, either, so I just pass them on the right when the opportunity presents itself.

It's mainly just a courtesy thing. I try to avoid flying up upon a slower driver so as to give them ample time to change lanes and, with the DRLs, I'm hoping that it will make me that much more noticable as I approach.

I have never understood why people have their fog lights ON when there is no fog.

Anyway, up here, it is required to have your headlights ON at all times, day or night, city or highway.

Thats one reason I like the DDEs on all the time. People move over. Dont know why But they do

Well, there is some logic to running foglights during the day. I guess if you would like the option of being able to turn DRLs on and off, one could argue for using foglights as a substitute to running headlights at full wattage. But then, that kind of defeats the purpose since the foglights wouldn't be on all the time, like the low-wattage, highbeam DRLs.

What there is no excuse for, is using foglights during the night. That's just asinine.

Foglights intended purpose is exactly what their name says: FOG, i.e., unless it's foggy (or some type of inclement weather), the foglights should be off.

It's all a matter of preference.

Just like some of you like to have DRLs on during the day. I think it makes more sense to have my foglights on at night then have my lights turned on during the day.

your right is a matter of personal taste, but DRLs are just that DAYTIME running lights. Fog lights are for FOG

Just for fog? Is there a set law on this? Where is it in the book? Tell me please. Does it say in the manual turn on your fogs just for fog only? Interesting... does it also say you must all have DRLs activated during the day

it doesnt any it anywhere. But do you think they named them fog lights because there great at lighting a clear night.

I dont really care who does what, to be honset. I just cant figure out why some do it. Thats all. nothing more, nothing less

Maybe it is a little different here in Finland where it can be a good thing to have fog lights - if they are aimed correctly. The weather is often bad as are light conditions. However, it is annoying as hell to be driving at someone with their 1973 Ford Escort RS (roll cage, 5 point belts, fart pipe ...) that has all 4 100W fog lights on - and it is two in the afternoon. To be honest, bright fog lights or high beams seem brighter in daylight than at night!

I ordered my 3er WITHOUT fog lights. They are useless anyway until someone comes up with a way to make these that effectively do what they are supposed to.

The DRL are not an issue here because you must have your lights on 24/7. My car memory is set so that if the car is running, so are the headlights. If the key is in position 1, then only the parking lamps are on.

And BTW, the "pathway lighting" (car memory) is a waste of energy! Just my 0.02€ worth ...
