I test-drove a '99 M3 and I've been wondering the same thing ever since.

BMW used to sell a kit to add an IHKA to a car without air conditioning. It was somewhat expensive. Ah, I found it at realoem. It seems to have gotten even more expensive.

I don't know of a kit to convert the analog IHKR to digital IHKA. The IHKA is a next generation system. I would expect the changes are fairly extensive.

In previous posts on various forums the predominant answer was that it's possible, but the whole dashboard needs to be removed to upgrade and the rest of the upgrade is a pain in the butt to complete.

Why do you say the digital setup sucks? I much prefer it to the old rotary setup. I like the pushbutton convenience, and digital has like 9 fan speeds where the rotary system has only 4. And although i don't use the AUTO function, it does a good job of keeping the interior at a fairly constant temperature.

I would have to agree with the previous posting, Digital looks great but please read all the horror stories how these climate controls do not last and have tons of problems...do a search for "climate control units" and there will be a 100 threads all with problems...
I have a manual in my car, and I sure would rather have a 97 version with climate, but I rather not have the problems.
