Yeah but I imagine there will be glare issues. Not sure why they did that. the current iDrive/Nav works quite well in all lighting conditions.

The double dash vent on the pax side reminds me of the double set of headlights on the Crown Vic wagon "Truckster" in National Lampoons "Vacation".

Something wierd about the pic. It looks as though it has an iDrive screen and an in-dash radio? Or all those buttons just for climate?

Wow, new X5s come with unlimited bottled water and potato chips!!! Not to mention a free laptop and cell phone.

No, sorry, those are factory installed options...

But seriously, my guess about the shift would be something similar to the one currently found on the 7-series. Fully electronical, you just tab it in D or R etc. The only obvious difference to the one on the E65/66 is the location....

Bangled interior.. as expected. It's hidious. Just like every other new bimmer interior.

Our (soon to be "older") X5's have the perfect interior. Thank you for the spy pic. This confirms for me that we sooOOOOoo made the right decision by not waiting.

Jeez that's bad.

Ok.. gotta go out and hug my X5 now. "Yes you are a good car aren't you.." hehehee..

I agree. My brother just bought an '06 750i, and I was a passenger on a 3 hour trip. I-Drive was the topic of conversation for the duration of the trip. Good concept, but typically German execution. Way too much "drilling down" to get to the option desired. BMW should follow Audi's lead, and have dedicated buttons that take one directly to sub-menus like "Nav", Entertainment, Settings, etc". He finally got it to display Sirius on the left of the screen, and nav map on the right. When the engine was stopped, and re-started, it went back to the top menu. Really, very clumsy. Unless BMW improves I-Drive on the new X, that enough would push me over to Land Rover.

A little tip for your brother on iDrive:

You can just "shift+hold" the puck in any direction to be taken directly there without having to "unwind" back to the main menu screen.

For example, if you are in "Entertainment," and want to quickly go to "Navigation," just slide the "puck" to the right and hold it there for about 2 seconds. It will take you back to the screen within the NAV heirarchy that you were last on.

Oh, and the voice commands are really helpful, too. "Assisitance Window, Map Facing North"

Yeah most people when they first see iDrive just focus on the controller and menus. It is logical to think they have no idea about shortcuts, voice commands, etc. So there first iDrive impression is usually not favorable.

IDrive is much maligned, but I think it's partly due to lack of training and experience in it. Not that there aren't some improvements that can be made...

Boy, I like that interior! I love our '06 X5 interior, but it really feels dated when I step out of my 550. A number of nit-picky observations, though:

• Love the placement of the SMG or Steptronic shifter. But how in the world are they going to squeeza a manual in there, next to the I-Drive? Ouch!
• Agree with previous comments about the lack of a hood over the Nav screen. Hope this is just a prototype (see poor fit of passenger side airbag cover), and that the final version will have the screen recessed deeper.
• Check out that "key" location: on the dash with the Start/Stop button next to it. Kinda sexy, but what will happen to your wood or aluminum trim after the dangling keys on your keychain rub against it for 6 months?
• A knobby, button-y stereo for the Luddites who can't / won't take the time to learn I-Drive? SELL-OUT!!!
• They tried to put in "real" cupholders (as opposed to the E60 and E90), but they still don't get it. Look at how those Dasani bottles are tilted backwards and rubbing against the dash. No room for a 16- or 20-oz water bottle, and prolly not for a nice aluminum coffee mug either. And I bet if you put a medium Dunkin' Donuts cup in there, half the time when you pull it out you'll hit that overhanging lip under the radio, and spill coffee on your console. The current X5's are far better.

But carping aside, I like it a LOT, and it is far, far better than I feared. Put the new twin-turbo in it and I'm there, baby!

An even easier way is to press the voice command button and state the screen you want displayed. E.g.: (Press button) > (Beep) > "Navigation" > (Beep) > "End". Voila: the last Nav screen you had selected is now displayed.

1 thumb press and 2 spoken words, and your eyes never left the road. I-Drive with Voice Command is AWESOME when you take the time to learn how to use it.

Took another long look at the photo - I LOVE that new SP steering wheel - what a great fat rim! Wonder if the SP now comes with Comfort seats, like in the E60's?

And the keys-rubbing-on-the-wood-or-aluminum-trim issue might be enough to get me to order Comfort Access (which I really feel is a pretty silly toy).

Agree. People need to spend the time to understand something that was intuitively obvious to the software engineer. That way they can save time later. Or they could just think "how would a BWM software engineer do what I want to do?" and save that learning time.
