E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Thumbs down HIGH-120i Fuel Consumption

Hey all...

Im from Johannesburg South Africa, and was curious to get some feedback from some people from other parts of the world, so maybe you guys can shed some light on this issue for me...

I just purchased a 2004 120i with 57000km (approx 35000miles) on the clock. After having read various write ups on the vehicle, I was hoping to achieve around 11.5l/100 fuel consumption. I dont use free ways and drive only around town. I have made a point of really driving slowly. the car is using a STAGGARING 13.8l/100 (18mpg) as shown on my OBC and proven to me by the dent in my pocket.

If this was an M3 I would understand but it is a 2.0l engine...

Anyone else with a 120i with some fuel figures in different driving conditions please?

Thanks....

Hey Smart7. I just looked up the brochure for the 120i. It says the urban fuel consumption is around 11 litres per 100 kilometres for the automatic running on RON98 fuel. Your 13.8 litres does not sound bad for heavy urban driving. Why? My 650i is drinking 21 litres per 100 kilometers in heavy urban driving! So you should not .

my Subaru Legacy is rated at 11l/100km in town and in-town driving gives me a 15l average. I've asked others and it seems like it's usual to have 30-40 % larger fuel consumption in town than rated be it BMW or Toyota Prius. I really don't know how they make those tests. The best way to decrease consumption is to avoid pressing brakes (that does not mean to drive slowly). But there are stop-lights...

Hey 650iOzBoy

Agreed Man, only thing is mine is manual and i get 13.8 driving slowly. If I was pushing it I could understand. But BMW dont seem to have an answer, so its live with it or buy a diesel hehe

Sky Keeper - I know bro, I dont know where they thumb suck those figures from, i rate I roll around in 6th from now on, braking causes higher fuel consumption?

sure braking is bad for fuel consumption - because you press on gas after you brake.

Smart7,

that seems way too high. In city traffic I get around 10l per 100km out of my manual 120i. On the highway when I sit at 120km/h I get around 8.2 l per 100km.

This is using 98 octane fuel.

cheers
Guthrie

I get 13.5 to 14L/100km in the winter, around 13L/100km in the summer. My average speed is about 30km/h or 18mph. What's your average speed? I think the average speed is an indirect indication of how much city/highway driving you do.

Also if you drive a lot of short distance when the car is not warm up, the efficiency drops way down. IIRC, someone in this forum told me the car runs in an open control loop when the oxygen sensor is cold. This hurts the efficiency a lot.

@ Smart7: Not knowing how you drive your 120i, but in your 1. post you say
"I dont use free ways and drive only around town"

If put on top of this you also run your AC/CC all time & use gasoline with a lower
octane than the recommended 98, I dont think your gas mileage is way out of line.

Fill it up, take it for a long ride & fill it up again, calculate your consumption manually
as it might be the computer giving you wrong readouts.

I run my 120i steptronic on a healthy mix of city and highway driving.. using 98 RON petrol, I get 10l/100km.. not too gentle with the loud pedal.. getting an average speed of 40+ km/h..

My 130i gets worse MPG then my 03 330i that weighs more and has larger upgraded injectors with a Supercharger on it.

My 116i has been averaging 12.5 - 14.8 since i got it in juli, seems as the higher
the avg. speed is, the better mileage it runs.

I broke my own record today, doing a 288 Km. trip averaging 82.7 Km/h and
15.2 Km/ltr.

BMW says the norm for the 116i is 13.3 Km/ltr.

I have the AC on all the time.

I just did 530 kms of nothing put urban driving in my e39 5 speed auto steptronic 2.8l stright 6,dont know if thats any good from an e39,buth that 2 weeks daily driving for us,highway we got 700 kms out of it with a bit left over to.

I find if ya 4 cylinder is using to much fuel and there is no mechanical probs (like black smoke out tail pipe) it's your trying to drive it like 6 or 8 cylinder car.

For me, its 116i running on RON95.
Just topped up petrol today. 507km = 43.46 litres. avg: 11.6km / litres
95% of the time driving on highway.
