I plan to research whether there are any 6-disc changers than can play mp3 files. If anyone knows about it, please post your feedback.

Edit: looks like many CD changers are there in the market. See http://www.mysimon.com/9015-11144_8-20606769.html Question now is: can we just substitute these changers with the original one that came with the car?

I understand that the mp3 option is probably going to attract a miniscule % of the bimmer users. So, sorry if this bores the others.

Thanks,
Update: Replacing the existing changer with new mp3 capable changer looks to be more work than a simple swap.

Well, I just installed the iPod interface (65110036448) in my 530xit and it isn't working

My car is a 2006 build 09/05. It has a 6-disc changer and the single disc is able to play mp3s. I don't have nav. It seemed I would be all ready to plug and play, but it just doesn't work. I'm using a new iPod nano 4th generation with firmware 1.02.

The iPod is recognized as I'm getting the BMW logo on the iPod screen. However no data is ever loaded from the iPod into the iDrive system. All menus (CD1 to CD6) remain grayed out and un-selectable. When I put in a CD full of mp3s into the single disc player I can play that just fine. I'm assuming I need to take the car to the stealership now and pay an arm and a leg to get the iDrive software updated. I was really hoping I could avoid all that given that I can play mp3s via the single disc already.

Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks,
-Marc

When you play mp3s in your single disk, can you see the name of your songs? Does it show up as CD on your nav?

Yes I can. The single disc shows up as MP3 not as CD and works fine. All songs show track names etc. I just came back from the dealership and needless to say they fed me a bunch of b/s. The technician claims that the iDrive needs to be 'de-programmed' the cd changer before adding the iPod most interface. I was told to fix this now would be 4 hours labor total of $520!! And they wonder why people don't like dealership service departments. I guess for the time being I'll put the cd changer back in as the iPod interface isn't working. Too bad I don't have a 3rd gen nano to test. The only other iPod I have is a first gen Ipod from back in the day w/o a dock connector.

Well for the time being I put the cd changer back in and luckily it works fine. Since I don't trust the dealer any further than I can throw him I'll call BMW to verify that the latest nano is even compatible with this thing. So frustrating.

BimmerRules:

I forgot where (could be BMW site) but I read that CD changers that went into E60 that were made after a certain point in 2006 were MP3 ready.
The real question is if we buy a changer from an '07/'08 E60, will it just work in our cars ('06 and before)?
I'm guessing wiring isn't any different. And since in-dash cd drive reads MP3s just fine, that means that the actual decoding happens in the drive, not the iDRIVE computer.
All the computer gets is a digital stream of data. (It even understands Cyrillic file names).

Does anybody know about latest changers being compatible with '06 and earlier E60s?

Thanks for the feedback Boris. I have a good relationship with my dealer's service desk. I will email him next week and get back to you once he responds. (BTW, those guys - Wide World of Cars, NY - quoted about $550 for the ipod interface. Was a bit high for my budget and hence my exploration of the mp3 world. )

BimmerRules ... please let me know what your dealer says. I am also interested in a MP3 capable changer for my 2005 e60.

$550 sounds like a bargain!!!
My dealer told me $900 parts+labor, ouch.
I'll have to shop around, there is no way they should be charging this much to install iPod interface!

Hi ,I just purchased a BMW 530 2009 with the 6FL option pre-installed (USB/AUX) ... my iPod video (5th generation) yet doesn't play properly with the iDrive system, names are not correct and theinterface doesn't show play lists at all ,I understood from this thread -haven't read everything- that a special cable must be used for full compatibility with the iPod ,My question is this ... should I pay for that cable ? or it should have come included with the 6FL option. many thanks for your great help.

In the US, it is included. Rest of the world (UAE included) typically gets charged for it as I recall. But that can vary by country. If you have a good relationship with your dealer, ask for it. They may throw it in for free...

If I still used the dealer for all my maintenance, I would move over to a different car. I cannot stand the local dealer here in Jax, so I found a reputable BMW CCA mechanic and I use him religiously for everything. When was the last time you could roll into the dealer, have them replace a turn signal in 10 minutes and be out the door at no charge? Either do it yourself or go to the BMW CCA website, find a local chapter, and find some alternatives, or some other people who know how to make changes to the cars, who can assist you.

I bought an aux kit for my 04 530i from bavauto for 70 some dollars. the instruction tells u to plug one end of the kit to the back of the radio, and the other end is for the mp3. it says the car needs to be programed for the mp3 kit to work, the dealer wants 400 some dollars to install the kit and program. i thought thas expensive. how u guys get it so cheap? R we talking about the same stuff? i am guessing the car needs to be programed so u can use the idrive on the mp3, instead of hitting "next" on the mp3, u can change songs using the idrive. anyone got better ways?

My dealer charged me 1 hour labor to install/program, per the BMW install instructions, which are posted in this thread--I'd suggest printing them and bringing to the dealer, or find another dealer.

The aux input is a simple audio connection, using a mini stereo plug, so all control of the MP3 player (except volume) is with the MP3 player itself. The car needs to be programmed so it recognizes the aux, and it will then appear as an option in iDrive.

iPod interface upgrade?

Hello all;

I'm a newbie here and have a question.

I just purchased a 2006 530i CPO with Nav and Premium Sound. As part of the deal I requested an iPod interface. The dealer said yes, but that they were currently out because BMW was in the process of doing an upgrade that would be shipping soon. Has anybody else heard this?

Does anybody know if 500 tracks and 255 artists limit was increased in the later versions of iPod interface?
Did they make any improvements form 2006 when this first came out?

Thanks!

There really is no "later" version, unless you're referring to 6FL.

Actually a retrofit is coming soon. Waiting for it to be released from BMW.

No ETA as of yet, but it will require dealer activation after installation.

Ipod Genius feature on Idrive?

Total nfg here. Been reading through the treads for about a month and soaking up all the info on my 328i I should be getting in March. One thing I have yet to see about the 6FL ipod integration is the ability of the idrive to control the Genius function in the Ipod. Is it possible to create a new Genius playlist through the control of the idrive? Thanks
