Figure out which center caps you have here.

Then buy whatever badge you want here.

They make just about any center cap you could want. I got mine from them and no issues.
They're made in Thailand and it takes about a week to receive them.

So I did some wheeling and dealing today (no pun intended).

Traded my Style 68s (decent amount of rash) with sweet dunlops (50% tread... some inner camber wear ) for clean stock 328i wheels with cheapo tires (75% tread) PLUS $300 cash.

So I grabbed the cash and head out to take a look at a set of minty BBS Style 42s for $400. I get there and they look great. Then the guy says... "Oh yeah, one of them is a rep" Don't you think that would've been something you should've told me before I drove an hour to here??

After some thinking, I offered $300 for the set and he accepted. The only difference with the one rep is that the polish is a little nicer, doesn't have the BMW stamps around the center cap, and it's not a real two-piece. It's not really something that you would notice when they are on the car, but it'll bother me.

I want to replace the rep with an original, but I think it's gonna be hard to find one as clean as these for a reasonable price. These wheels are near perfect.

Also, this brings up another tough decision. ACS Type 2s or Style 42s? The Type 2s still have that ****ty chrome on them and I can't find a cheap way to get that removed :/

I was looking for Style 42s when I found my Style 5s. You should be able to find a loner in good condition without too much trouble to replace the rep. Are the Style 42s ET20?

You can paint over the chrome on the Type 2s but you need to acid etch and prime first. Down side is once you do it there's no going backward.

You know what... I'm not sure. He said that they are near stock E36 offset (around ET40), which makes sense because I think they were on option on the E46. But on the wheels it says IS20.

Hmm... I don't really care if it's non-reversible. Is acid etch cheap/easy?

All the 42s I saw when I was looking were ET20 but I did see some posts where people had ET41. Might just be there are more of the ET20s around.

You can mix an etch your self using a mild mix of muriatic pool acid and water or you can buy a self etching metal primer which has an acidic component already in it. I'd recommend buying the self etching primer as it's much easier (and safer) to use. I'd only do the etch mix myself if it was too large an area for a rattle can.

Here's a DIY on how to do it and here's a self etching primer.

I just double-checked and they ARE et20 and 74mm (E39) hub bore

The guy selling them must have been a fool. He knew I was putting them on an E36 and we talked for quite a bit. Oh well, maybe I'll be able to flip them and make a few bucks. Not worth the bother if I have to get adapter rings and replace the rep and still have to deal with the crappy offset.

Thanks a lot for the info on etching primer. I know what I'll be doing this break.

edit: I forgot the hub rings are super cheap on ebay. Maybe I'll put performance tires on the 42s (forget replacing the rep) and put smaller, cheaper tires on the 18" ACS for hella flush status and cruising.

This doesn't show 42s as a 2 piece though. Nor as 17". If you search by E39s, it doesn't show 42s at all.

Replica would bug me too, but on the whole, great deal regardless

This site shows both one piece and composite BBS Style 42s.

CJ, If the Style 42s are 17" and you run something like 225/40 x 17 or even 235/35 x 17 you should be OK with the ET20

Hmm. I'm sure they're two piece, though. I doubt BBS would make fake two-piece. Also, they're definitely 17".

Ok sweet. I was planning on running short sidewalls anyway because I did notice a tiny bit of flex on hard turns with my 235/45.
