It's PDC, Park Distance Control. When in reverse, it beeps faster and faster the closer you are to things so you don't hit them.

^This. We didn't get that in the US (or Canada, I think), but everyone else did. I guess that means we can parallel park better than the rest of the world.

Pretty surprising they put that in an e36. A waste of compexity if you ask me.

It can be quite helpful in cars which are hard to see out of, such as modern SUVs with insane C-pillars, etc., but in an E36, it really isn't necessary.

On that note, I read somewhere that apparently backup cameras in cars are going to be mandated somewhat soonish?

There are a bunch of tech-based things which will be mandated soon for new cars. Collision avoidance and lane departure warnings are a few more which will soon become mandatory.

eh, i'll take the insurance money.. a parking lot accident shouldn't* total out an E36.

this just means when I can afford to buy a car new it's going to have all sorts of goberment mandated features that I don't frickin' want. It's bad enough that vehicles with a certain amount of power or chassis classification must have every single electronic driving aid ever taking up all that weight and cutting into hooning unless I turn it off. Which they will be, all the time. I can get behind airbags and certain crash safety gear, but please don't weigh my new car down with 10 camera's, skynet, a tablet in the dash, and a mind of it's own when I can't be bothered to drive it myself.

Is it so much to ask for, a new car with ample power, suspension, styling, interior, and the fewest amount gizmo's possible. iPod interface, heat, AC, and a systems monitor. For a reasonable price. Why does every new model get bigger and heavier, isn't that the antithesis of the theory behind building a sporty car? If logic dictated design the new M3's would be no larger than the E30 in terms of curb weight, and gizmos.

If I knew how to design and engineer cars I'd be starting a kickstarter right now to bring up an affordable no BS hoon mobile.

Yeah, I'm just hoping people won't become dependent on the technology, and crash when it fails. Kinda seems inevitable that it'll happen, though.

I doubt I'll be buying a new car within the next decade, so I couldn't care less.

And most people don't stop and leave their insurance information when they leave a dent in your car...

I'm in that boat as well, my taste far outpaces my paycheck

im not so much worried about dings as i am a 10 mph doozy that would require immediate body work, if you're the kind of person who flees after wrecking someone's car, there's a spot reserved in hell for you, right next to me, where i can kick your a$$ for the rest of eternity.

Can't sue them if you're dead because your car hit a tree at 60mph.

I won't mind the universal presence of lane departure warning, especially since new cars are so damn hard to see out of due to the rollover protection requirements. Each pillar is like a freakin' tree trunk nowadays.

In fact, some lady in a new Touareg nearly side swiped me yesterday at 70mph on the freeway because she didn't see me in her blind spot.

All this above is why I will always drive older vehicles.

well i don't mean in cases where they cause no personal damage to you if they drive themselves (or don't) into a tree and die. I'm more referring to them sideswiping you on the interstate or backing into you. Though if they do have a fatal accident and destroy personal property you can most certainly file suit against their insurance if they don't reimburse you in a timely or sufficient manner.

When I was a kid someone cartwheeled their car into my neighbor's house taking their parked car with them and dying in the process. the insurance company of the deceased tried to stiff them on payment saying they weren't liable for anything that was over X amount of dollars, and they turned around and sued them with their insurance co's lawyer and won the full assessed value of their house, car, and damaged property because the house and car were considered a full loss.

Until you decide to have children. That's one reason why a lot of people buy a new car.

But yeah, I survived being driven around in VW Rabbits and Honda Civics that were barely more study than a tin can, and also survived high school driving a car from 1966...

Spot on. I transferred the bumper mouldings of the standard E36 onto the ///M3 bumper when I chnaged the bumpers.

Very helpful, cause I don't need to check behind me when I reverse the car into the garage.

That would make me so nervous.
