The cops are the only thing keeping me from getting a track pipe...I hate how they do that. My car is louder than I think on the outside apparently.

NA cars with cats and aftermarket muffler are louder than cars with no cats to resonator and muffler, my car has longtubes, test pipes, stock 2 resonators, and vibrant blow through

and it is not loud unless im wot at 4k.

turbo cars are a whole different story but everyone needs to understand an e36 with cats and axleback is louder than my car with no cats and axleback (keeping the stock resonators).

That's what Im trying to figure out. I have an AA Gen III catback on it now with the stock midpipe. I want to hear how loud it will be before I spend 500 dollars on something that will honestly just be an inconvenience with emissions. I hate obnoxious cars.. especially obnoxious slow cars lol. I dont want to be that person.

thats the loudest my is.

My buddy parked his exhaust only e36 at my house at night and at idle it was 3x louder than my car huge difference and he has full stock exhaust except for the muffler.

he went headers, catless midpipe, and stock res with muffler, sounds great and much quieter at idle.

Well Frank, one option is to attach a loudspeaker system to the top of your roof, then if the cops say anything, apologize and say that you were just trying to imitate the new M5 with their piped into the stereo engine sounds, but to make it one better and share with EVERYONE!

I honestly don't know what the difference is between the two, other than that the 'U' is a single muffler and sounds a bit deeper at idle.

I think the RSC36 sounds better after it has been broken in for a few thousand miles. That said, Ed, can you elaborate on the System U a little for me? How loud is it really? Both inside and outside the car. Any drone? It's so damn hard to tell what's what by looking on YouTube, since microphones distort and amplify sound so differently.

Slapped my m3 bumper on. I like it ALOT more than the non-m bumper. Can't get my stupid Hamann exhaust to sit nicely. Played with it for an hour today. Boo.

Karl,

For what it's worth, the System U is known as one of the loudest of the shelf exhaust for the e36. I have a Hamann (Similar sound/level to supersprint) and the system U is about 20% louder than my exhaust. If you want one that is loud, absolutely 0 drone, and a tamed rumble at idle, the Ireland Engineering exhaust is the best option for you.

Outside the car it is louder than my roommate's '00 CLK430 with a magnaflow muffler at idle. His is louder under load.

There is a slight drone @ ~25-30 mph in 2nd gear. I'm rarely in that speed zone long enough for it to grate on my nerves.

At WOT (especially in, say, LeHigh Tunnel) she's glorious! You'd think there were velocity stacks on her.

I've only been hassled once, by a cop I passed in 2nd gear at WOT attempting to follow an ambulance containing my sister's close friend who had just collapsed at a concert.

(Cop was merely a douche who couldn't get me for speeding (after following me for ~8 klicks) and when we got to court had THREE people there that same day for the same identical "Improper Muffler" charge, and the judge subsequently told the cop for future to: 1. have some form of proof before entering his (His Honours) courtroom again, and
2. that he (the cop) had overly sensitive hearing.

Oh, and the cop after being asked to please hurry in whatever he was doing so I could continue to follow the ambulance containing a close friend then proceeded to take over 45 minutes to play with himself).

TL/DR:

Car sounds nice, not excessive unless you're well onto the skinny pedal.
