Thumbs up Changed my long distance and I'm really happy

Disclaimer: I don't gain anything by posting this... no commission, no profit... absolutely nothing. Just posting it cause I like it, and I happened to save a lot of money.

Switched long distance plans, and I got my first bill today for MCI's The Neighborhood plan. Spent weeks looking for a catch, but didn't find any that applied to me.

The basic deal is this: you pay a flat monthly fee ($49.99 in my case), and you get all local, regional toll and long distance included. So basically, it's priced sort of like a cell phone plan, except the minutes are unlimited and the fee is a fixed monthly fee.

You get all the bells and whistles, Call Waiting, Call ID, Call Waiting Call ID, 3-Way Calling, Speed Dial, and a pretty cool implementation of voicemail. When someone leaves you a voicemail you get an email, a page and/or an SMS message and you can retrieve your messages by phone or through the web.

The only gotchas I have found:

1. If you use your phone for dial-up Internet, you are metered for 5000 minutes of data time. If you have broadband at home, this is a non-issue.

2. If you have DSL with your phone company, it won't work unless you give that up.

3. If you are a voicemail user, you don't get the stutter-tone that you usually get when there is a message waiting. So your only cue for a message waiting is the email, SMS and/or page.

4. You must give MCI control of your local, regional toll and long distance.

The upside...
I had around 15 hrs worth of long distance calls on this bill cycle, and my phone bill was the agreed to flat rate. Each long distance call had a nice $0.00 next to it.

If you find a catch, let me know -- I didn't. It cut my long distance bill significantly and it's with a well known long distance provider. Best of all, this holiday season's phone bill will be one of the cheaper ones in recent memory.

Ooh... ATT has been advertising a pretty cheap local ervice here in LA for some time, but when I called, they didn't offer anything special for local toll, which is VERY important here. I don't see any mention of Local Zone calls, but aside from that this looks pretty good to me.

How is MCI when it comes to customer service, or when there are LEC issues?

What's the distinction between Local Zone and Local Toll? Worth calling MCI to find out. They sell it as "everything" is included, but I'd double check if it's not explicitly listed.

I haven't had to use it yet... I hope I don't have to. My only experience with MCI customer service has been for minor billing issues, which were always easily handled. The billing is all electronic now (if you want), so I probably will never deal with them. Mine is just a regular auto-debit from my Amex card.

I'm with Sprint and pay 7 cents long distance and 5 cents within CA. They also offer me a very good international rate which I use a lot. Fee for all this is 4.99 a month. Been with them for almost a year now and am very happy. Service is SOOOOOOO much better than AT&T (which is not a hard thing to do). I really hated having to deal with them. I have AT&T cable (as if I had a choice - forget Microsoft - talk about monopoly here) and they are just bunch of complete retards. One good thing about my cable is that they screwed up and gave me some channels that are not in my package. They tried to back out of it later but I told them (I went through like 5 surpervisors before they reached this decision) that I was under impression that these channels are part of my package and that I can't live without them now and will terminate and switch to satelite (fat lie - I live in an apt) if they don't turn them back on. Well, they did. I guess the fifth surpervisor was the empowered one...
Sorry for this little hijack! At least we stayed within the telecom industry

I eliminated our long distance carrier altogether. Instead, we have two cell phones with X amount of local and long distance calling. With the current plan we use about 25% of the long distance total time, and we save $25 a month calling out on cell phones, and having just basic service for incoming calls.
