Z4 M Coupe underneath pics

Will start with the differential.
Pics are with reinforcement plate heat shield and charcoal canister cover removed.

Castrol SAF-XJ is the correct fluid.
Diff. plugs are one use. Based on some info, doubt that BMW is doing that.
Make sure you bring this up if you have the dealer do it.

Thanks for noticing that, Ron. I recently changed the f/r diff fluid on my X3 and re-used the old plugs. So I checked TIS, and sure enough, it says to use new fill and drain plugs on the X3 too! I doubt techs would know that. No ill effects so far, but it'll get new plugs on the next change.

Tranny Z4 M

The Z4 M uses MTF-LT-2 tranny fluid.
The non M's with the magnesium engines (N52,54) use MTF-LT-3 tranny fluid.

Since MTF-LT-3 is the latest, I suspect some are using MTF-LT-3 on all cars.









I use a Snap on 8mm stubby hex socket.
I also have a Sears.
Snap on measures 8mm
Sears measures 7.9mm
Stubby being shorter makes it easier to torque.

Your plug is a M24 tapered thread.
Z4 one is a 18 mm straight thread.

I'm bookmarking this thread so I can print out the photos/pictures for taking into my dealer when it comes time to change all of the fluids after my 1200 mile breakin.

Right now I've got 465 miles. I need to get out more.

That's what it says. Based on the bleeder being at the top, I suspect it won't (especially) if jacked up in the back. Wil try it when I get back from HC.

Hi,

I had my 2006 Z4 coupe in for the new software upgrade today and inquired about the cost of a manual transmission oil change, it has 2000 mi. on it now. Dealer SR quoted $400.00, seams a bit high. Can it be done at home using ramps or do you need to have it level on jack stands?

What a rip off.
Figure $50 for the fluid.
Flat rate for the change is 4 units which is a half hour.

I did mine on four stands with the car level checked on the drivers side frame rail between the wheels.

Dave Z just emailed me the part #

I'll be removing the stock one. No plans on replacing it with a dummy one.
I think that the car shifts fine with it.
I will also be changing the clutch and gas pedal springs (increase).
Come December the car comes apart.

You can go with no valve at all, but going with the Dummy valve has value if there is a warrenty issue with your driveline. You dont want it coming back to you. Just install the dummy one and no one knows the wiser.
