Brent, thank you very much. I tried your product and the application technique suggestion and it is definitely a great improvement! Noises reduced by 90%. BMW should OEM that product and should ship it with every X3 if it is that hard to get the right gaskets for it...

Yeah...she is. I don't even recognize it anymore. It seems like everytime she opens the door her ring puts a scratch on it. I want to trade it now...

Still Creaking - Update and Question

So I have had the SI B 51 28 05 (new window guides) fix done twice now. Each time the dealer orders the correct parts as listed in the SIB and installs them fine but they continue to squeak. When you look at the backside of the guides they have a “EPDM” label not the “EPDM+PET” label as specified by the SIB and even though the SIB specifically states you should NOT use guides that have “EPDM” label on them, the dealer installs them anyway.

Anybody had this fix work ? Anybody know how to order these part numbers but get the newer parts stamped with “EPDM+PET” ?

Thanks.

For those who are still fighting this battle with your dealer, please note that there is a new TSB dated February 2007 that supersedes all the previous. I am taking mine Wednesday. The number is TSB 51 28 05.

They recommend replcing the gaskets with new ones and also installing a teflon tape on the car body, somthing that was not done on the pervious three TSB's.

Hopefully that'll do it for good!

The dealer I went to said it was the window seals not the door seals that needed to be replaced. The original noise was coming from my driver-side door but they went and replaced all four window seals. Well after they did that the driver-side door was quiet but the passenger door started squeaking. Then less then a week later I opened the door behind the driver seat and the window seal stuck to the inside of the door and the window seal just came off! So now I had issues with two different door! Out of utter frustration I never went back to the service department.

I had that persistent problem and a strange electrical problem where the dash lights would just go blank for a second or two, then it would come back on. They replaced the light switch.

Both problems were never really "fixed"!

I sold the 05 two months later and purchased the 07. I've had the 07 for about a month now, so it might be to early to tell, but so far - no issues.

There is a TSB for the dashboard lights going off. All you needed to do is ref that TSB. This is wahy now when I have issues I only go there with the TSB's printed!

My frustration is due to the fact that there are TSBs on these issues yet even after service department followed recommendations - the issues persisted.

I just had this last TSB done on my car. The teflon tape seem to do the job. let's see how long will it last. the bad side is that is not as aesthetic as without.

I don't know if it's the exact same "teflon" tape... but like many X3 owners, the sqeaky / rattling noises on the door swere driving me nuts, and I took it to the dealer back and forth many times... replaced windows trim, door seals... etc.... all didn't last for more than a week.

Except the very last time, they put some sort of tape around the outter door frame (on the car body side, not on the door).... and it has been quiet ever since. It must have been more than a year now.

By the way, the "tape" used for mine was transperant. You can't really see it unless staring at it inchs away.

Hope this helps.

yup, that is exactly what they did to mine two days ago except the tape while transparent has developed bubbles and is very unsightly now. But if I have to choose between unsightly when the door si open vs noise when I drive, I'd stick with the later.

Hey, I'm new to the x3 forums.

Can someone elaborate on what this sound is and if this is covered even if your car is out of warranty? I just recently got a 2004 x3 3.0, but it's out of warranty, so I may just have to live with this if it's not covered.

It's a faint, ongoing squeeking sound that happens when you drive over slight irregularities in the road.

Just do what I recommended in post #4 and you will never have an issue.

Well, this is indeed never ending and getting worse. Yes the Tech protect works for a short little while but recently something scary caught my attention: the gaskets at the bottom of the doors rubbed against the door jamb so much that the paint is gone down to the metal. That really sucks. I had all the TSB's done or so I think but this really pisses me off... On top of it I am now in the extended warranty and the dealer says this is no longer covered. So heads up guys you may be able to do something before your gaskets start working on your paint and help the rust get in.

petren,

Is subscribing to alldata, the only way to get the TSB details ?

Just looked on the alldata site and it says the BMW data has been removed at the request of the manufacturer, so I can't even subscribe !

Before I traded in my '04 a few weeks ago, the door seals had been replaced 2x for the creaks. I was told by a service supervisor that this problem actually orginated on the 5 platform. The last fix scheduled before my new X came was sunroof guides. Service thought it would finally take care of the problem...I guess the new owner will find out.

Folks,

If you've experienced the noisy seals and your problem is still there after going to the dealer, here is some advice and a cheap sure fix:

The TSB 512805 talks about replacing the seals and applying the Teflon tape BMW PN 9 407 798.

If your dealer applied a narrower version of this tape like in my case, or it was missaligned, the noise will still bother you. But if you want to re-apply the 16 mm/1 inch correct part and wonder where to get the same part number only way cheaper, here is the 3M part number: 5430 3M Squeak Reduction Tape

Attached is a link to the 3M datasheet for the same tape roll (20bucks) that costs at BMW 180 dollars/roll!!!: Part number Confirmed today as I got a sample leftover roll from teh local BMW dealer:

http://products3.3m.com/catalog/ca/e...er/output_html

3M™ Squeak Reduction Tape 5430 Transparent, 1 in x 3 yd 7.0 mil (0.18mm) Sample, 12 per case

3M™ Squeak Reduction Tape 5430 Transparent, an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene film tape with an acrylic adhesive, having low coefficient of friction

GTIN(UPC/EAN) : 0 00 51131 06356 3
3M Id : 70-0160-5008-3

Applying the tape correctly as per TSB with the top margin alligned with the gasket gets rid of the squeeks once for all.

Now I have to figure out why I get water in my car when is parked nose down on a ramp... that sucks!

Cheers!

Nick

Petren, Is this the exact same TSB you went by? This one has a correction and is listed as Jan. 2008 at the top. Says it superceeds the one from Feb. 2007.

http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B512805g.htm

From where I got this some people said it fixed the problem without needing the tape. I really don't think the tape is a/the solution. I had the creaking really bad the last service I went in for. The tech/SA guys noticed it. They treated the window guides with Gumipfledge (or however you spell it ) and that quieted them down to almost nothing but I don't think it will last after a few car washes.

EDIT: The reason I don't think the teflon tape does any good is because after they lubed the window guide seals the noise went away. Also with the windows cracked just a tad there was no noise before the they treated the seals. Therefore, the door edge seal that touches the body would not be making the noise.

I can't seem to be able to access the 2008 TSB. Can you PDF'it? The problem with any type of gasket treatment is that it goes away after few washes.

I tried GumiPflege, Carbaflo, Techprotect, replaced 4 TIMES the seals!!! They even tried the narrower teflon tape . Nothing worked. But with the wide teflon tape it does take the noise away. I'll report back in few weeks.
Believe me I had this car for 5 years and no treatment worked for more than a week or two. But on the other hand, I may be paranoic too with this noise. The teflon tape seem to work though.

The 2008 TSB is identical to the 2007 TSB and both list the use of the Teflon tape. What I'm proposing is to source the tape directly from 3M as opposed to get BMW to put it on for you in case you car went out of warranty like mine.
Also most BMW dealers use the narrower tape which is wrong as also highligted in the TSB because it is waaay cheaper for them. But if they follow the TSB correctly the tape shoulod be 16mm in width. and your noise should go away. The 3M part numbner above is the 16mm tape BMW should be using. Hope this helps.

Try this link again. I did after posting it and it didn't work the first time but did after a few tries. If it doesn't work wait a few minutes before trying again.

The link works now. I actually figured it earlier as well. The TSB is identical to the 2007 one and still calls for the Teflon tape. See my post above.
