How to change air filter on 2000 528i?

It seems very easy to DIY from Bentley BMW 5 Series (E39) Service Manual. But 2000 528i's air filter housing is different and I have no idea how to open it. I could not find similar topics here. Any instructions? A picture would be great helpful! Thanks!

Air filter

Unless I'm missing something, all it takes is to pull on #4 below and replace air filter element #2

Yes. It's different to the book, it's like a drawer, pull it out, replace it, then push it back. The position is on the left front .

Thank you very much for your reply. I did try to pull #4 out but failed. Is there any hidden lock or just because I am not strong enough? Do I need to take #21 out before pulling? Thanks again!

Nope. Just push the little plastic clip lock in on each side of #4 and sort of push up at the same time. #4 then comes up just like a drawer.

Funny, when I got my 528i a few months ago I had to ask this board the same question. So simple once you see how it works, I'm so use to spring clips.
