Increased Emissions

Well I got a nice little warning this morning "Increased Emissions" with a scary Engine symbol. Car still drives the same (meaning great).... Wonder if its that ****ty Exxon gas I filled up with yesterday. Anyone else got this yet ?

Emission Error

Some of us have seen this before. Run a quick search on the 6 sub forum. It's not a big issue.

Oh, check your gas cap, ,ensure it is tighten properly.

For the record, I just got this error today too. My car would crank but would not turn over. I came back an hour later and it did start up, but I was left with that fault code.

Took it into the dealership today, and they said it was a communications fault that just had to be reset. All is well.

its comes and goes. Most of the time its not a huge deal. Sometimes it triggers from the gas cap or when you put in gas the car doesn't like. When there is something wrong, its usually the thermostat being broken or the o2 sensor out of wack.

It would just suck if it happened frequently and you would have to travel to the dealership to get the computer reset to erase the fault code and "Service Engine Soon" light.

run out of petrol

Hi one of the first things you could consider is to add a high quality additive to one tank of fuel, I don't mean the cheap rubbish that many sell but something like BG44k I think is the brand name, this will clean up your total fuel system right through to the oxygen sensors in the exhaust system. This stuff is expensive in the UK but lots cheaper in the USA...
As for your car running out of petrol well sadly given the cars age you may have got junk from the bootom of your fuel tank into the fuel filter or further on, it may clear itself with a good long run... this is why it is best never to run out of fuel !!!! easy said but it can happen to anyone !!

If you use top tier gasoline at the right octane consistently, you should not have a problem.

Just fill your tank as normal there should be enough space in the tank to add the BG44k, then run the tank down to low again, don't top up when at 1/4tr or 1/2 just use until warning light comes on then refill as usual, dont worry how long it takes to empty the tank as the additive should be okay, I understand that Lexus , Bently etc use this stuff at major services,,,,

I had the same increased emissions warning several months ago. Turned out to be some type of sensor or pump in the fuel system. I drove it for a week before scheduling an appointment; the car drove fine with no issues. Mine was covered under CPO.

Little bit of advice. Try not to run the tank so low. If there is any sediment at all you will suck it up. Not a good thing for the fuel system. You may want to have the car checked.

Unfortunately when you get an emissions problem, it can be a number of issues. Bad sensor, bad fuel such as water in it or pump getting faulty. You have gotten some good advice here but like I always saw, try the least expensive thing first. Do the system flush with the BG44K. if that doesn't work then you are looking at a component failure that will have to be diagnosed. Also you may want to check the coils. My friend recently had this problem after filling up in QUEENS! with his 745. After some testing, it was found that one of his coil went bad. You can always take it to an indy shop and get the fault codes and then do the process of elimination.

Bg44k

Hi, the stuff starts working once it is in the tank, and stays in all parts of the fuel system whilst the car is not in use, one of the things I did was give the car a good blast and long drive about an hour or so to ensure I was maximising its use. If you read the BG44K site you will see the recommendations and results. Since using it I found that my idling was better and throttle response improved, these could be my mind set, so proof my mileage went from 23.5mpg to 26.7 mpg, without changing driving style, and on long motorway journeys at 80mph ave+ to 31,2mpg. This is imperial gallons UK measure.
If the problem on your car is either poor fuel or dirty fuel system/injectors you should get a result. If not then you will have to look at other avenues......

so i still have 230mil left with the new fuel and the GB44k in it the car still shaking while i stand in a rad light and the increased emissions and another msg shows on the screen says "engine malfunction" engine loads may damage catalytic converter.
drive with reduced engine load.
please have the system checked by bmw ...

WHAT DO I DO ? SHOULD I WAIT TILL I FINISH ALL THE FUEL WITH THE BG44K U THINK ITS GONNA WORK OR TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE GARAGE ?

like I've suggested before, if the flush don't work get the car hooked up to read the codes by an Indy that has the computer that can connect to car. Looks to me you may be experiencing the same problem my friend had with his 745 where he got a bad coil on one of his cylinders right after a fill up. It may have been a coincidence that it happened and had nothing to do with the gas itself but you will never know until you get the fault codes.
