Anyone ever have this happen?

I was out for a drive yesterday, and upon rounding a sharp corner the engine bogged abruptly and started to miss. Any application of the accelerator just caused more noise; very little acceleration was to be had. I probably could have limped the car along at 40mph, but instead - being that the "service engine soon" light had come on - I decided to pull over and shut it down immediately. After a fiasco of a time with BMW Roadside Assistance, the dealer finally had the car in hand today and took a look. The verdict? No codes thrown (<- what?). No sign of trouble. Nothing wrong. I took possession of the car this evening and sure enough nothing seems wrong with it.

So what the hell was it? Bad gas? Nah, it was exactly half way into the tank. Electrical? Well, I did just have a new alternator put on it. Injector? But why no code?

Had the same thing happen to me yesterday on my way to work. Car was fine then the check engine light came on and the car was out of power and stuttering. Got to work and turned the car off and the check engine light was gone but still stuttered and had no power. Called roadside assistance and they towed me to the dealership. Turned out to be a bad ignition coil. They replaced all 6 of em and it's fine now.

edit: I just noticed that you have on 03 convertible too. I'd tell the dealership to replace them.

abomb, thanks for the reply.

Do you know if your car threw any codes? That is the part that I cannot understand. I suspect they only knew it was the coil in your case because the computer threw a code...

This is what it says on the service sheet they gave me:

33143 READ FAULT MEORY AND GOT FAULTS 204, 208 AND 198 FOR MISFIRES IN CYLINDERS 3 AND 4 WITH MISFIRE IN MULTIPLE CYLINDERS. CHECKED SPARK PLUGS, OK. CHECKED AND FOUND COILS TO BE BE FAULTY REMOVED AND REPLACED ALL SIX COILS. CLEARED FAULT MEMORY AND TEST DROVE VEHICLE.

So I guess it definately had stored codes in the ECU.
