Test drove e92 335 engine temp was very high

I test drove the e92 335 and it almost maxed out the temp gauge (I would say 4/5 of the way to max temp). It was only 75F outside and it had not been run hard for more than at best a quarter a mile on a ten minute demo before I noticed high temp I noticed half way through demo and it did not cool down much before returning to dealership also A/C was off. Anyone else noticing an engine heat issue???

The manual says that oil temp can be anything up to 300 (full scale).

I noticed that on my 335i and asked BMW service about it - my car was consistently at 2/3 to 3/4 of the temp guage. BMW said it was normal, and that the turbo engine tends to run hotter than the other engines.

The turbo runs hotter? What about the lower compression ratio? It's like 10.2:1 versus 10.7:1 on the NA version.

In light of the higher engine operating range for the twin-turbo, do you think BMW will continue to recommend 15,000 mile oil change intervals?

Let's get this straight,is it an OIL or COOLANT temperature gauge?

If it's an oil temp one big deal.Change the oil every 7.5k.

It's oil temp. Wait, on 99% of cars, is the temp gauge coolant or oil temp? I always just assumed it was "engine temperature".

On 99 percent it's an engine coolant gauge.

You guys need to study a bit more on automobile basics.

And people wonder why BMW switched to a buffered coolant temp gauge, then eliminated it completely.

Hey - congrats! You will love this machine. where do you drive about - south charlotte or uptown area? My silver one was the first one off the truck. I believe that the other one one on the roads in charlotte right now is a stone gray with red leather.

Lower maybe, but over 10:1 is very high for any turbo engine.

I had a Porsche 944 and the temp gauge was calibrated like that. Normal operating temperature was always 4/5 of the way to the max in the summer. I guessed it had something to do with calibrating the gauge for operation in the Alps, not Arizona. It was a bit disturbing to look at the gauge here in the US with our wide temperature ranges, because there's not much space between normal summer operating temperature and imminent melt down. I couldn't begin to guess the number of 944 head gaskets, thermostats and radiators that were probably replaced because of the calibration. I changed to a lower temperature thermostat and all that did was keep the heater cool in the winter! I'm a little surprised that BMW would still do something like this, 20 years later.

My Volvo turbo is always dead center in the middle of the gauge and that's were it's been for 170,000 miles. If the motor runs hot, it doesn't show on the temperature gauge.

thanks man, congrats to you too. I test drove a 328i up at Hendrick as soon as they got one, and loved it, so i figure the 335i will be that much better.

I tend to drive in South Charlotte, University area, and the outskirtts of uptown. What about you?

I cant wait to see some on the road...although it will make the wait until i get mine seem that much longer.

All over C-town - but more in the uptown, and north area. I'll be looking out for you.
