550i winter tire setup

Does anyone have any recommendations for a winter setup on a 07 550i with Sports package?

I think I am going 17" but not sure with the tire size 225/50/17 or 245/45/17

Is it okay to use replica wheels? Any recommendations? Performance Nokian, Dunlop or Blizzaks?

Thanks

You want the skinniest tire for the winter - with the tallest sidewall. Go with the 225/50/17. I choose the Dunlop M3s and am happy with them. I think Nokian probably makes a better tire but they are hard to find and I was worried about having to find a replacement if needed.

What type of wheels did you use?

Lightbulb Wait...

Don't go that small...

18" will work fine and your car will not look like the Prius wheels (Tiny).

Replicas are fine just make sure the offsets match the manual specifications.
try tirerack and review their recommended size which is typically optimal for bimmers.

Gotta agree with doug999 on this one. On my E39 540 SP I swapped out the 18" stock wheels for 17" ASA's with my winter tires, and thought the car looked "just fine" through 3 winters (and got lots of compliments on the styling of the ASA AR-1's). There is a LOT to be said for a taller sidewall when you hit one of those unexpected Boston potholes!

I have run Dunlops snows for 5 years now on a Mercedes C43 AMG, my 540 and my wife's prior XC90, and will almost certainly stick with Dunlops for my 550 and X5. Great handling tire in the dry, excellent wet traction, great tread life, and the winter traction didn't degrade as the miles mounted up. (Lots of fun in an empty snow-covered parking lot with the tractin control turned off, too. Very smooth progressive breakaway, and very catchable. It's fun to act 16 every now and then!)

I will stick with ASA's for wheels, as I found them to be very strong and a great deal for the money. Will probably put AR-1's on the X5 and something different on the 550.

Doug, did you have the M3's last year? I am trying to decide between them and the 3D's, so any input would be welcome.

I have the M3s and got them last January. Even though I still had my GS430 - I was afraid that I would be at work or something in the 550 and get stuck in the snow (I know how well the summer tires work in the winter... they don't).

I bought a set of Style 138 wheels (the stock 530 wheel). I like it the best of all the 17" wheels. You just have to be careful not to purchase wheels off an xi as those will NOT fit.

(of note my GS430 has the Blizzak LM-22s - which were not as good as the M3s IMHO)

attached are pics of the car with the style 138s

I'd also be interested in views as to the relative merits of the Dunlop 3Ds and M3s, as well as the Blizzak LM-22s, as I need to get a set for the winter as well. Thanks,
